Louis Osman was an English artist, architect, goldsmith, silversmith and medallist. He is notable for the gold coronet he designed and made for the investiture in 1969 of Charles, Prince of Wales. Louis Osman (1914 - 1996) A Pavilion in a Private Park Pen, ink and wash 67 x 100 cm Provenance: the family of the artist. Signed lower right. Osman was as much an artist as an architect. This is likely a portfolio piece from his time studying at the Bartlett School of Architecture, and is as such a piece of architectural history as well as a beautiful Osman design. Osman was awarded a First Class degree and the Donaldson Medal of the RIBA (for the best result in his year group) by the Bartlett, and then went on to the Slade School of Art. He subsequently trained with Sir Albert Richardson – we also have several Richardson works in our collection. After the war, Osman busied himself as an architect. His work included contributions to Westminster Abbey, and Lincoln, Exeter, Ely, and Lichfield Cathedrals, Staunton Harold Church in Ashby de la Zouch for the National Trust, and of course his folly: the Grade I listed Elizabethan manor house, Canons Ashby in Northamptonshire, now a National Trust property. Eduard Xavier Kapp (British, 1890 – 1978) What’s the Time? Pen and crayon, tondo Signed and dated ‘Kapp 75’ (in the centre) 8.1/2 x 8.1/2 in. (21.6 x 21.6 cm.) Edmond Kapp was born in Islington, London, on 5 November 1890, of American and German Jewish parentage. He gave himself the middle initial ‘X’ – sometimes said to stand for Xavier – to distinguish himself from his father Emil Kapp, who was a wine merchant. However, his parents called him ‘Eddie’ while his wife and friends knew him as ‘Peter’. During his early years, Kapp was continually ill and, while convalescing, entertained himself by drawing at home. As his health improved, he attended Dame Alice Owen’s School, Islington (1903-10), with periods at Berlin University (1909) and L’Institut Français pour les Etrangers, Paris (1909). He then read Languages at Christ’s College, Cambridge (1910-13), though spent most of his time writing and drawing. Kapp took a studio in London, and worked intensively until the outbreak of the First World War, contributing to the Daily News, the Onlooker and other periodicals. During the war, he served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the Royal Sussex Regiment on the Western Front, and then in Intelligence, rising to the position of Staff Captain on Haig’s Staff. Finally, he founded and directed the Neutral Press Counter-propaganda Section. In 1919, Kapp returned to London and, after abortive periods at three art schools, worked alone. In that year, he made his name with an exhibition of caricatures, held at Furst’s Gallery, London, and accompanied by a catalogue introduced by Max Beerbohm. This soon led to contracts with three London periodicals and a book of caricatures, Personalities, published by Martin Secker. Through the 1920s and 30s, his drawings of musicians and other personalities appeared in a wide variety of periodicals, most notably Time & Tide; were collected in further volumes; and were exhibited at the Leicester Galleries. He considered himself to be a ‘character-portraitist’, producing images of psychological not satirical power, and disliking the term ‘caricature’. Between the wars, Kapp developed other aspects of his artistic talents, the desire to study and the search for subject matter often taking him abroad. Modern, large scale social commentary painting by California artist John Valdez. Comes with the original sketch as well as a book about the artist. Inspired by the cover of a Mexican tabloid, Valadez invites the viewer to examine the duality of a society that mourns the death of an iconic religious leader and neglects those close to them who are perhaps deemed not worthy of consideration. The bold red headline reads “El cardenal Gabiri será beatificado” (Cardinal Gabiri will be beatified) above a large accompanying image of the cardinal in his casket and two smaller images, one of sobbing mourners and another of the cardinal sitting at the altar. Dividing the image is a subhead that reads, “El pueblo católico está de luto” (the Catholic people are mourning) placed above a depiction of four young boys who seem to be sniffing glue. The adjacent text reads “The indifference of the adults is the cause behind the issues these forgotten children have to live.” This work was exhibited at the Pacific Standard Time, Long Beach Museum of Art in 2011, the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in 2012, as well as the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago, IL in 2013.
