Originally from the Northwest with a B.A. from Stanford University, I have painted, published illuminated books, and lived and traveled extensively in Asia. Now working primarily in ceramics, I draw images from the deep well of past experience, always starting from a strong “mind’s eye” vision. My ceramic pieces are as much about their inside as they are about their sculpted outside. Implied are the dichotomies between the inner and outer, between that which is hidden and that which is seen, between the esoteric and the exoteric, between the soul and the body. I continue to create “Metaphysical Pots” that feature water both inside and outside, becoming metaphorically both the Water of Life and the Infinite Ocean, symbolizing the continuous process between creation and transcendence. Other pieces include shapes that repeat in a pattern that follows the form of the vessel. It is a “bio-geometry” that leads the eye back to the inside of the vessel, a “Jacob’s Ladder” that leads not just up but in. Using sculptural techniques, I cut through the wall of the pot to get more depth and dynamic movement. I continue to push the limits of my medium, taking apart thrown vessels and reconfiguring them in new ways.

Ken Ferguson (1928 - 2004) received an M.F.A. in 1954 from Alfred University, and went on to become one of the most influential teachers and artists in his field of pottery. From 1964 until 1996, when he was named Professor Emeritus, Ferguson was Head of the Ceramics Department at the Kansas City Art Institute. His work has been included in solo shows at the Garth Clark Gallery in New York and the Frank Lloyd Gallery in California and can be found in prominent museum collections such as Charles A. Sara Fine-Wilson's “Spore" is a gestural 17.5 x 9 x 7 inch ceramic sculpture in white and gray. It is hand built and wheel constructed in white stoneware. Individual hand formed details are layered over the entire surface creating a graceful and fluid form. The surface is coated in a cool white matte glaze that becomes darker gray and glossy along the points that have been caught during the soda firing process.Some of the points in this piece have been blunted and crusted over during the firing process. The glaze emphasizes the contrast between surfaces and edges. Fine Wilson’s ceramic work contains elements of both raw and refined surfaces including cracks, ruptures and pooling of glaze.

Maxwell Mustardo is a ceramic artist whose highly textured forms are the result of meticulous research into the chemistry of kiln firing. He includes materials such as glass, metals, and plastic in the glazing and post-firing process, resulting in deconstructed vessels with unique surfaces, such as crystallized metallics or lush neon moss.
Maxwell has earned multiple awards for his work including an Award of Excellence from the James Renwick Alliance, an ARGUS grant for materials research, a Levine Endowment grant to study material culture in Japan & South Korea, and as the SUNY-wide finalist in the visual arts category for the Thayer Fellowship in the Arts as an undergraduate student. He has been a resident artist at the Takaezu Studio, the Mendocino Art Center, the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft, the Sonoma Community Center, the New Harmony Clay Project, & the C.R.E.T.A. Rome International Center.
