Chris Trueman
Chris Trueman is a Los Angeles-based artist. He graduated from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2003, earning BFA degrees in Painting and Digital Media. He relocated to southern California to attend Claremont Graduate University, earning an MFA in 2010. Trueman currently teaches at Chaffey College and has previously taught at UC Riverside, Chapman University, Fullerton College, and Santa AnaCollege. He has guest lectured at Chapman.University, Pomona College, and Santa Ana College, and was a Northrup Grumman Visiting Artist/Scholar at the Museum of Art and History Lancaster.Trueman has exhibited his work in numerous exhibitions in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, La Jolla, Seattle and internationally in Milan,
Dehli, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, Rotterdam, and Brisbane (AUS). The Lancaster Museum of Art and History presented a solo exhibition of his paintings.entitled, Slipstream. His work was also included in the group exhibitions, To Live and Paint in LA and The Subterraneanst; and Risky Business at the Torrance Art Museum. His work has been exhibited at various art fairs including Dallas Art Fair, Pulse Miami, Pulse New York, TX Contemporary,
Art Aspen, and ArtMRKT San Francisco. Trueman’s work has been included in the publication New American Paintings MFA Edition #87 and New
American Paintings Pacific Coast Issues #103 and Pacific Coast Issue #121.

In James' paintings, he explores how uncertainty can lead to meaning and understanding. How harmony can be experienced even within tension and chaos and how the recognizable can rise out of purely abstract form. In his abstract paintings he responds to these phenomena by creating contemporary icons – works meant to encourage contemplation and meditation.
James' more recent works have evolved from the romantic representational ideal into the symbolic, abstract archetype. He comes from a classical background inspired by the great romantic landscape painters such as Turner, Lorrain, Friedrich and Moran, his recent work is more influenced by the work of artists like Klee, Miro, Rothko, Pollock, Riley and Richter.
James creates complex abstractions layered in familiarity and veiled in mysteriousness. The unorthodox methods he uses to apply and move oil paint allow him to create compositions that are formally beautiful – infused with tension and drama but also expressive of the spiritual, symbolic, mysterious and eternal.
