About the Item
This mixed media collage by Melanie Boone is a delightful and strikingly layered composition that evokes the wonder of a medieval tapestry or a troubador caravan. Among the materials used to create this exquisite piece are tarot cards and calligraphic parchment, transporting the observer to another time and another world. Boone's pieces sell as fine art through Neiman Marcus and have sold at well-known auction houses such as Sotheby's. Measurements for Collage without frame: 20 Inches W X 24 Inches T
Melanie Boone grew up in Southern California where she cut her artistic teeth on regiinal art contests. She received her artistic education at Fullerton Junior College where she studied drawing, painting, assemblage art, and jewelry making. She furthered her education at UCLA and a productions studio, adding techniques such as silk-screening to her repertoire. After suffering illness from the silk-screen inks, she began making multi-media collages in California.

Melanie Boone wanted to be an artist for as long as she could remember. At the age of six, she won an art contest in Laguna Beach, and throughout her childhood, whenever she could make enough money to buy painting supplies, she would indulge her passion. She was tutored in grade school by Elsa Salvison, a mosaic artist who invited Boone into her home, shared her love of art and allowed her to work in her home studio. Boone enjoyed her art classes in high school, but after viewing an art exhibit of the “fearless art” of Edward Kienholz at the age of 16 she gained the confidence to trust herself and follow her own path. After high school, Boone enrolled in Fullerton California Junior College where she was introduced to pottery and loved it. During her two years at Fullerton, she learned many other techniques including drawing, jewelry making, assemblage art and painting in every medium. Abstract art was and remains a passion. Determined to find a career in art, Boone worked in Watts at a production art studio. Although the working conditions were difficult, she learned many more techniques and mastered the process of silk screening. Eventually she moved to a better studio that produced higher quality work and continued to grow in her artistic abilities. Creating color silk screens, she was now able to draw the designs and frequently used the beautiful flowers that she loved so much. Her reputation was growing. She was active in performance art and was teaching workshops in various colleges including UCLA. She and a friend started a studio together where they could be assured that the quality of work going out would be very high. Those years were another high-growth period for her. When an opportunity to teach children was presented, Boone and her daughter moved to Yosemite for four years. She continued working on silk screening in addition to teaching art to children, which she found very rewarding. Eventually, the years Boone spent working with silk screens began to take a toll on her health due to the toxic inks used, and she had to make a change. She moved back to California and began anew, then moved to a Northwest rural community with many other artists Although Boone can work in any medium, she currently creates multi-media pieces. Always a collector of things found in nature, she never lacks for items to blend into her work such as feathers or bone fragments. Deeply enamored by Asian art and history, she incorporates this exotic look into her art, but she enjoys mixing cultures and may add a piece of fabric from Bali onto a drawing that appears to have a traditional Chinese look. Gold leaf is another favorite enhancement used in her collages. She stains everything creating an antiqued look. Many of her works have borders that are made from hand-dyed silks that she creates herself

"Untitled #1", Mixed Media on Paper
By Artis Lane
Located in Detroit, MI
This mixed media on paper from the seminal artist Artis Lane is one of the many model paintings from her long and illustrious career. The subject is a nude male standing in pose. Artis Lane, in her many nudes, chose to depict a diversity of bodies, of all shapes, colors, and sizes. This work was recently exhibited adjunct to the "Steps Towards Justice: Artis Lane's Portraits of Rosa Parks" exhibition at Collected Detroit in 2021.
Most recently in January 2021 Ms. Lanes' dynamic sculpture bust of Rosa Parks was chosen from the National Portrait Gallery in Washington DC to reside in the President's Oval Office as a reminder to all who visit or see it via press photographs of her courageous demand for equal rights. It is a constant source of inspiration.
All my life I have worked on three levels of consciousness: Portraits, Social Injustice & Metaphysics. In my work I strive to heal, uplift and inspire viewers and collectors to find perfection in their own being. - Artis Lane
Artis Lane lived and worked in Los Angeles for over twenty years. She knew many celebrities, movie stars and individuals who moved in those circles. She was a sought after portrait painter. This particular painting of the famous movie star, Zsa Zsa Gabor, shows why. Artis has captured the personal essence of her subject, a warm, friendly woman, though famous, is not absorbed in her notoriety. This piece is signed by the artist on the lower right.
Born Artis Marie Shreve in 1927, near an all-Black village in North Buxton, Ontario, Canada. After three years of art college in Toronto, Canada, Artis moved to Detroit where she met and married journalist and activist Bill Lane. In Detroit Artis Lane continued her training at Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. Cranbrook was designed by architect and faculty member, Eliel Saarinen who collaborated with Charles and Ray Eames on chair and furniture design. Numerous creative artists who are alumni of Cranbrook include: Harry Bertoia, Florence Knoll, Jack Lenor Larsen, Donald Lipski, Duane Hanson, Nick Cave, Hani Rashid, George Nelson, Urban Jupena (Nationally recognized fiber artist), Cory Puhlman (televised Pastry Chef extraordinaire), Thom O’Connor (Lithographs), Paul Evans (Brutalist-inspired sculpted metal furnishings), Eugene Caples (small bronze images/abstract), Morris Brose (Bronze Sculptures), Herb Babcock known for blown glass) and Larry Butcher (mixed media abstract artist.)
While in the Motor City she painted and sculpted the portraits of many of the business and political leaders of the day; Governor George Romney, Ford family members and Coleman Young, the Mayor of Detroit. After her divorce, she was invited by Diahann Carroll...
