About the Item

Titled verso lower left: "Arcadia V"; signed lower right: "Ruth Eckstein". From the estate of the artist. Ruth Eckstein has received national and international recognition as an abstract modernist painter and master printmaker. Born in Nuremberg, Germany in 1916, Eckstein worked in her father’s fabric store as a teenager, developing an early interest in art. In 1933, Eckstein’s future husband, George, was arrested by Nazi officers for left-leaning political activities. After several months in jail, he fled to Switzerland and then to Paris, where Ruth joined him. In 1939, fearing a Nazi invasion, George and Ruth left Paris for New York City. In New York, Eckstein studied with a number of highly influential figures at a variety of art institutions. She studied painting at the Museum of Modern Art and The New School for Social Research with Stuart Davis, and at the Long Island North Shore Community Art Center with Harry Sternberg. She continued her studies at the Art Students League in New York, where she studied under Julian Levi and Vaclav Vytlacil and immersed herself in printmaking techniques, painting, and drawing. Eckstein later found herself drawn to the woodcut technique of printmaker Seong Moy, and studied with him at the Pratt Graphic Art Center. Eckstein's work became characterized by a majestic tranquility achieved through pared down compositions and subtle modulations of color and shape. In many works, landscape is suggested by simple abstractions of form and gentle color harmonies; in others, tilted geometric designs with clear bold colors provoke a tension between balance and motion. Eckstein won acclaim in numerous publications, such as The New York Times, the New York Arts Journal, Newsday, Artspeak, Journal of the Print World, Art News, and Arts Magazine. Throughout her career, she received several awards for her work, including three Audubon Artists Awards and the Fairfield Award, presented by the Silvermine Guild, CT. Eckstein’s work is represented in over fifty prestigious public collections, including the Biblioteca, Galleria D’Arte Moderne, Rome; Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris; The Boston Public Library; The British Museum, London; The Guggenheim Museum, New York; The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C.; The Metropolitan Museum, New York; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; The National Museum of American Art, The Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C.; The New York Public Library; and The Philadelphia Museum of Art. Eckstein’s work is also featured in numerous corporate and private collections.

Resurrection
By Henry Botkin
Located in Boston, MA
Signed lower left: "Botkin". Henry Botkin (1896-1983) was a mid-century American modernist equally known as a painter, a collage artist, and for his work as a proponent of abstract art. Botkin’s oeuvre can be defined by three distinct styles—School of Paris Modernism, Cubism, and Abstract Expressionism. While each of the three styles is considered distinct, music can be seen as the common thread throughout his artistic output. In the 1930s, the impact of Gershwin’s opera “Porgy and Bess” is readily apparent in works such as Woman in Boat...
