About the Item

Michael Chance (B. 1987) Green Shoots, 2021 Oil on canvas Signed lower left Titled, signed and dated verso 153.5 x 122 cm. Provenance: Michael Chance; Private Collection, United Kingdom, purchased from the artist’s studio. Exhibition history: Art City Works, Open Call Summer Exhibition, London, 2021. This distinctive composition is dominated by an uncanny block of fleshy limbs, comprising an assembled mass of jagged geometric fragments. The converging forms meet at a central passage of deeply pigmented, sinuous impasto, interspersed with miscellaneous forms. Abstracted figures in profile grow from a supersized foot and fingers; a blue cat leaps outward into the background; colourful segments of half-information punctuate the form with a purposeful confusion. The sole green pigment comprises the verdure shoots which climb from the bottom of the weighty amalgamation. Chance has described the work as the first in a series of large paintings experimenting with the synthetics of image construction, a monumental form that externalises the simultaneity of the human condition, in continual exchange with the external environment. Green Shoots is one of Chance’s more ambitious works, fusing a Neo-Cubist approach with the unseemly imagery and thick brushwork developed by Philip Guston. A quiet narrative permeates the immediately absorbing symbolism, subtly inducing a sense of paranoiac observation that speaks to an undisclosed meaning. Slanted eyes dominate the upper section across a horizontal boundary: almond-pointed gazes shaped in electric blue pigment; a minuscule pupil dotted within an expanse of white; a black glaring eye that is the only feature of the arching cat. The work was purchased directly from the artist’s studio in 2021 by a British private collector, which was at that time on the first floor of The Peanut Factory, Bow, London. Chance himself described the work as having emerged from the breakdown of a long-term relationship, a sort of privately codified auto-biography that is characteristic of his other large-scale oils. Michael Chance lives and works in Hackney Wick, moving between a narrowboat and his studio in The Peanut Factory. He first studied Popular Music in Liverpool, writing his thesis on the filmmaker Peter Greenaway and critical theories of fine art, film, and the Frankfurt School of philosophy. Chance moved to Manchester where he played in a band and began to produce drawings and screen-prints. In 2012 he moved to London and enrolled as a postgraduate at the Royal Drawing School. Between 2014-18 he co-founded the Mercer Chance Gallery with fellow RDS graduate Rachel Mercer in Hoxton, London, showing emerging artists with an emphasis on painting and drawing. Although primarily working as a painter, Chance also practises in filmmaking, sculpture, music and poetry. Recent showings include a solo exhibition at Studio 23, Belgium; One Room Gallery, Shoreditch; Apt Gallery, Deptford; and two drawings as part of Christie’s Lates ‘Picasso: A 50-Year Legacy’.
