About the Item

Very rare crewel work artwork of a sailing ship with two sailboats decorated above the main vessel. Most likely American. Done in a primitive, naive style. Circa 1875 and in very good original condition. Unknown maker. Under glass. In original birds eye maple frame. Overall framed measurements are 17 by 18.5 inches. Provenance: A Long Island, New York estate. Crewel embroidery, or crewelwork, is a type of surface embroidery using wool. A wide variety of different embroidery stitches are used to follow a design outline applied to the fabric. The technique is at least a thousand years old. Wikipedia
