About the Item
Carl G. Evers was an artist with a very impressive body of work who deserves more attention in the maritime genre. The son of a maritime engineer father and an artist mother, it seems almost fated that he would go on to paint ships with romantic flair along with an engineer's eye for detail and accuracy. He's particularly known for painting naval fleets, historic ships and working vessels including passenger liners, tugs and tankers.
For the painting above he chose one of the greatest American sailing ships - GLORY OF THE SEAS. The last merchant clipper built by the renowned Donald McKay of East Boston, many would claim that she was also his greatest achievement. The ship would have a long life, launching in 1869 and sailing well into the 20th century. Although she sailed around the world from American ports like New York and Boston over to Liverpool and out to Australia, GLORY OF THE SEAS is best known for spending many years working in the Pacific, regularly sailing between San Francisco and Puget Sound or up to Alaska.
