About the Item
This large and exciting scene features an American Revolutionary War battle in Chesapeake Bay. With great color and lively brushwork this painting was done at a large scale which captures a grand vista of the Bay along with many small vignettes to draw the eye. No less than ten other ships surround the two combatant vessels as they exchange cannon fire. A small rowboat in the foreground has three men cheering heartily, as DEFENCE pursues the British vessel, her crew visible on deck along with great details like the ship's bell. Large sweeping scenes of naval action, are among the artist's best works and the depiction of an early Revolutionary War battle is another plus.
The reference book/catalogue raisonne on Leslie A. Wilcox by Frank G.G. Carr, former director of the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich, has this work pictured as catalog number 254 and lists the painting on page 44 with the following history:
Delaware Bay, Chesapeake Bay, and the Coastal Waters of the Carolinas saw many a maritime conflict take place on their waters in 1776. Pennsylvania, Maryland, and Virginia had many small and large vessels for defense, and a number of captures were made early in the year. In March, the British sloop-of-war OTTER, with several tenders and prizes came up Chesapeake Bay almost as far as Baltimore. The ship DEFENCE, under the command of Captain James Nicholson of the Maryland Navy, went out to meet the OTTER, drove her down the Bay, and captured her prizes.
The painting includes a first edition copy of this book, signed by L.A. Wilcox, which was limited to an edition of 600 copies.

- Amercan Merchant Ship in Philadelphia HarborBy Thomas BirchLocated in Costa Mesa, CAThomas Birch is considered one of the earliest American Marine painters of importance both in his own time and historically, forming the foundation of what would become a great American Maritime movement in the successive years of the 19th century. Born in England, Birch started as a landscape painter but after the War of 1812 he turned to marine subjects, taking inspiration from the best of both English and Dutch maritime traditions but refining these techniques into a very recognizable style all his own. The work featured here is a classic of Birch's later period, when he focused specifically on maritime subjects, mainly the busy waterways of Philadelphia Harbor. Here we see one of those scenes- a series of ships plying their trade, all framed by the city as it sits across the Delaware River, with the tall, white spire of what is either Independence Hall or Christ Church to the left of the main vessel. The details of the city are particularly good in this painting, with the wharf building to the left and the long line of buildings all along the shore. The American Merchant Bark at the center of this painting is rendered in excellent detail, from her house flag and pennant, to her rigging and sails, and down to her deck filled with the activity of crewmembers readying the ship to head out, her gilt billet...Category

- The Start of the Great 1866 Transatlantic Yacht RaceBy James Edward ButtersworthLocated in Costa Mesa, CAA beautiful painting with historic importance, three schooner yachts line up before the Sandy Hook Lightship for the start of the world's first Transatlantic Yacht Race held in 1866. In his book, "J.E. Buttersworth, 19th Century Marine Painter", biographer Rudolph J. Schaefer has noted six views by the artist of this event. This is largest of the known works of this important benchmark in American yacht racing. Identification of the racing schooners is assisted by the special colored flags worn by the yachts. Foremost in the painting, wearing the Blue was HENRIETTA, owned by renowned newspaper publisher and infamous yachtsman James Gordon Bennett, Jr. White was atop the mast of VESTA, owned by tobacco baron and racehorse aficionado Pierre Lorillard, who initiated the competition with a dinner party boast over turtle soup...Category
