Original painting of the Chrysler building in New York. Made in the artists studio in Birmingham and created using her own photograph taken from the Empire State building. The photograph is then altered digitally before drawing onto board. Each shape is individually painted cell by cell until the whole board is covered and the image revealed. Stand close and the painting is an abstract of shapes, stand back and the city scene is there! The colours are hand mixed from a base range of just 5 paint pots, this piece having 58 different colours within it. Joanne Tod (b. 1953) is a renowned Canadian painter acclaimed for her unwavering approach to realism, technical precision, and critical wit. She is also one of the country's most celebrated living portrait artists. Tod has frequently depicted institutional buildings such as banks, museums, and post offices to explore the architecture of authority and trust. This painting is a portrait of the New York Life Insurance building, located at Place d'Armes in Old Montreal.
