About the Item

“Sun and Stars” by Allison Green is an oil painting which depicts large-scale sunflowers set beneath a deep blue and starry night sky. The painting is part of Green’s new series, “The Night Garden,” in which plant forms hidden amidst the darkness of the night whisper an enticing call. Speaking a mysterious botanical language, they harken to starlings, star gazer lilies, king and queen proteas, peace lilies, royal mushrooms and monarch butterflies. These anthropomorphic subjects provide a rich and reflective visual allegory, to be interpreted by the viewer. Enveloped in darkness yet illuminated by the starry sky, these works invite viewers to sit amidst it's lush garden of metaphors and uncover to the stories within.

Monsters and Monarchs
By Allison Green
Located in New York, NY
With each subsequent exhibition, Green has expanded the botanical content from single trees, bushes and weeds to now entire gardens--teeming with growth and rich with animal and plant life. Depicting plants blooming and thriving during the night, her cast of anthropomorphic characters includes Starlings, Stargazer Lilies, King and Queen Proteas, Peace Lilies, Royal Mushrooms and Monarch Butterflies. Enveloped in darkness yet illuminated by the starry sky, Green’s lush and mystical environments invite viewers to sit amidst the gardens of metaphors and uncover the stories within. "Monsters and Monarchs" is one such example of this series, which Green has aptly named "The Night Garden." As in each luscious, nocturnal landscape in the series, Green offers us a look at what we mortals are typically not privy to, as we lay asleep indoors. Green shows...

STAR BLOSSOMS
By Gregg Louis
Located in New York, NY
Gregg Louis is a multidisciplinary artist born in St. Louis, Missouri and based in Brooklyn, New York. His works, in diverse formats, investigate fundamental philosophical quandaries with a great sense of playfulness and humor. Aspects of his work often revolve around perception, existentialism, and the construction and destruction of belief systems. Louis’ sculptural work uses the objet trouvé, or found object, as a jumping off point. Meditating on our perceptions of everyday life, he often incorporates wigs, light bulbs, TV antennas, kitchenware, and other domestic objects to create uncanny forms. Through a process of alterations, sometimes violent, Louis twists...
