About the Item

This artwork "Waiting" 1999, is an oil painting on canvas by noted American artist C.M. Cooper, b.1952. It is signed and dated at the lower left corner by the artist. The canvas size is 16 x 20 inches, framed size is 22.25 x 26.25 inches. Framed in a wooden silver with grey patina frame. It is in excellent condition. About the artist: CM Cooper refers to herself as a “contemporary traditionalist.” Her impressionistic paintings blend classic aesthetics with the modern figure. Women, children, dancers and animals in contemporary settings come to life through her bold impressionistic brush strokes. Cooper’s delicate color sensitivity and wonderful sense of light create images that are filled with emotion and feeling. Born and raised in Southern California, Cooper was educated at Art Center College of Design where she earned her BFA. A career in fashion advertising followed, along with freelance work in editorial illustration. But her travels to Europe---including an opportunity to live and study in Paris---began to focus her interest towards a fine art career. Her studies continued at the Associates in Arts Masters Program and 4 years of study with Joseph Mendez. Rare opportunities to observe and study under the highly respected artists Howard Terpning and Raymond Everett Kinsler further enhanced her artistic abilities and vision. Today she is a full time gallery painter and art instructor. Cooper’s work is featured at several galleries across the nation, from South Carolina to Santa Barbara and Carmel, California. Most recently she was blessed by receiving an Award of Excellence /AIS National Juried Show 2022. Other highlights before that was to be honored both a Best of Show (2017) and a Second Best in Show AIS (2018) for their first and second "Small Works" Shows. Other awards include the Salon International’s 2010 Top Award, Third Place in Show and the Museum Director’s Choice Award at the California Art Club’s 92nd annual Gold Medal Juried Exhibition in 2002 which were great honors. She is a member of both the Oil Painters of America (OPA) and the American Impressionist's Society (AIS). Cooper has been a featured artist in Southwest Magazine’s Figurative Issue, November 2003, and was selected as an “Artist to Watch” in November 2002. She was also recommended in their “Collector’s Choice” issue in October 2003. Other publications include International Artist Magazine’s “100 Ways to Paint People and Your Favorite Subject” in 2003 – 2004, along with several other publications. Art instruction is another major aspect of Cooper’s artistic calling. She believes that “Teaching enriches my life as an artist.” Cooper provides a solid foundation for figure painting along with the necessary skills of composition, observation and editing of subject matter. The opportunity to repeatedly review artistic concepts not only benefits her students but the teacher herself! "The Artist's Wife at the Loom, " Harry Hoffman, Bright American Impressionism
By Harry Leslie Hoffman
Located in New York, NY
Harry Leslie Hoffman (1871 - 1964) The Artist's Wife (Beatrice Pope) at the Loom, circa 1915 Oil on canvas 30 x 32 inches Housed in a period Newcomb-Macklin frame Provenance: Estate of the artist Private Collection, Massachusetts This painting depicts the artist's wife at the loom, producing textile versions of Hoffman's underwater paintings. The screen shown behind Bea is an underwater scene also painted by Hoffman. The study of this painting is held in the collection of the Wolfsonian Museum in Florida. Harry Leslie Hoffman was born in Cressona, a small community in Pennsylvania's Schuylkill Valley. His mother was an amateur artist who encouraged her son to pursue a career in the arts. In 1893, Hoffman entered the School of Art at Yale University and studied with John Ferguson Weir, the son of Robert Walter Weir. After graduation in 1897, Hoffman moved to New York to continue his studies at the Art Students League. He also traveled to Paris and took classes at the Académie Julien. In the summer of 1902, Hoffman attended the Lyme Summer School of Art, in the town of Old Lyme on the Connecticut coast. The school was headed by Frank Vincent Dumond and was located in a boarding house owned by Florence Griswold. The school eventually grew into an artists' colony and a center for American Impressionism. When Hoffman first arrived as a student, he was not permitted to stay in the house which was designated for the professional artists only. However, his outgoing personality soon won him many friends at the colony. In 1905, Hoffman settled in Old Lyme and worked as a full member of the artist colony. He was particularly influenced by Willard Leroy Metcalf, an Impressionist also working in Old Lyme. Fellow artists later fondly recalled Hoffman's antics at the Griswold house, which included playing the flute and banjo, tap-dancing, singing humorous songs, and performing magic tricks. In 1910 Hoffman...
