“I paint because painting is a private Utopia,” Erró writes of his art. The landscapes in Erró’s work are a constantly changing kaleidoscope of images, multivalent and mysterious, not infrequently controversial, bursting with life – and titillating, too! There is room in his pictures for both paradise and visions of fear. Erró is the alias of Gudmundur Gudmundsson, born on 19 July 1932 in Olafsvik, in north-western Iceland. Since Gudmundur first became enthralled by pictures of works of art in a catalogue from the Museum of Modern Art in New York at the tender age of ten, painting has been his passion and his mission in life. He was accepted into art school in Reykjavik as a 19-year old, subsequently complementing what he had learned there with further studies in Oslo. Erró travelled extensively in Spain, Italy, France and Germany in the 1950s, studying at the Florence Academy of Art in 1954 and at the School of Byzantine Mosaic Art in Ravenna in 1955. It was around this time that he began to exhibit his works, first and foremost in Paris, where he chose to make his home in 1958. During the 1960s he established contact with the Swedish museum director Pontus Hultén, who encouraged him and took him under his wing. Over the years Erró has taken part in hundreds of exhibitions and today his works are on show in museums all over the world, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Erró’s pictorial world is peopled by comic-strip characters and autocratic despots alike. Donald Duck with his Daisy, Chip & Dale, and other Walt Disney creations are unselfconsciously juxtaposed with Greek gods and madonnas. Elsewhere the German dictator Adolf Hitler stands shoulder to shoulder with his Iraqi counterpart Saddam Hussein, while the Chinese leader Mao Zedong is portrayed in truly monumental proportions. Erró adopts the same provocative spirit to expose leaders whose propaganda machines advocate dictatorship, conformity and uniformity as he does, in others of his series of pictures, to allow his veiled Oriental women to expose their own breasts. Weapons, violence and sexuality are mainstays among his motifs. Pastiches of Picasso, Léger, Disney and Dalí have also become something of a hallmark for Erró, as he deploys a potpourri of styles and pictorial languages with wilful abandon. Some of the works from his earlier years bear traces of Roberto Matta’s evocatively cosmic creatures, while others resemble the comic strip-inspired paintings and popular culture pastiches produced by his friend, Öyvind Fahlström. But Erró also shares a close kinship with artists like Roy Lichtenstein, Andy Warhol and James Rosenquist. In the summer of 2001 a museum was inaugurated in Reykjavik dedicated to Erró. Here visitors can see the full breadth of the artist’s work, from his very earliest paintings to those of more recent years. Observing his art is like fitting together the pieces of a jigsaw puzzle. The images blend, fuse and coalesce. The visual synthesis they create personifies a lusty joie de vivre and a playful vitality that stand in stark contrast to the opposing brutality of dark destructiveness.
Erró
UDMUNDUR GUDMUNDSSON, known as ERRÓ, is an Icelandic postmodern painter known as the co-founder of the Figuration Narrative movement in France in the early 1960s. Erró discovered art in a catalog from the Museum of Modern Art in New York, and became passionate about painting at the age of 10. After studying art in Reykjavík from 1952 to 1954, and then in Oslo, Florence and Ravenna, he settled in Paris in 1958, before moving to Thailand and the island of Formentera.
The artist's career was rich in encounters with Brauner, Masson, Miro, Man Ray , Giacometti and Max Ernst, Duchamp and Breton, whom Erró met in Paris, and then Jean-Jacques Lebel, a friend with whom he collaborated on Happening from 1963 to 1965. He also befriended the curator Pontus Hultén, who placed him under his protection.
Voluntarily provocative, Erró portrayed despots, comic-book heroes and gods of Greco-Roman mythology in a plastic universe full of enigmas. Hitler, Mao and Disney characters rub shoulders in a climate of violence and sexuality. Heir to Lichtenstein, Warhol, Fahlström, Roberto Matta and Rosenquist, the artist interweaves styles and graphics, multiplying contemporary allegories.
The artist's numerous creations include "Mecanismo, mécamanifeste, 100 poèmes mécaniques" and a mechanics manual; sets and masks for Éric Duviv's film in 1962-1963; a giant fresco in Angoulême in 1982; the portfolio print created by Cristel Éditeur d'Art for the 9th Prix Jacques-Godet and 2nd Prix Denis-Lalanne in 2012; exhibition with Jean-Jacques Deleval and Speedy Graphito at the Arsenal de Soissons.
A resolute pasticheur, Erró also uses Picasso, Léger, Disney and Dalí to stigmatize the society of spectacle and consumerism. He took part in exhibitions such as those at the Venice Biennale in 1975, the Galerie Nationale du Jeu de Paume in Paris in 1999 and FIAC in 2001.

The work of Antonio de Felipe is a constant source of fascination and surprises. It is a great pleasure to witness how the artist’s inge-nious world of ideas and his sense of humour are constantly evolving. Antonio de Felipe was born in Valencia in 1965. Ever since a very young age he has felt an artistic drive that led him to earn a fine arts degree at the University of Valencia. During his studies he worked as a creative designer in an advertising agency which undoubtedly influenced what would be his future pictorial style. In 1996 he moved to Madrid where he has his studio. Antonio de Felipe has developed his extensive work in different series. His subject worlds form a surprising genre blend, a linking of series characters, classical art and commercialism side by side with contemporary icon worship. His motifs are often painted in constellations that pay homage to great artists, including Velázquez, Picasso, Mondrian and others. Many of his works exhibit an ingenious ability to express powerful paradoxes. One example of this can be seen in the paraphrase on Diego Velázquez famous Las Meninas (Spanish for The Maids of Honour), painted in 1656. Instead of the glass of cold, perfumed water in the original, Antonio de Felipe places a Fanta soft drink in the hand of the young Spanish princess Margarita. The painting is part of the series LOGOTIPOS (logos) devoted to the world of art and advertising. This series was followed by VACAS (cows), with paintings such as Vaca Vogue, a pink cow on the cover of a Vogue magazine. Then, CINEMASPOP where actors like Marilyn Monroe and Audrey Hepburn among others were revived as pop icons, with well-known creations such as Black Audrey. In 2009 Antonio de Felipe presented POPSPORT in which the artist mixes the world of sport with cartoons and art history, uch as in La carrera where Picasso’s Demoiselles d’Avignon are participating in a run at a stadium. And latest, the LPop series where the artist is playing with the motifs and titles of famous LP album covers, such as Bad Bart where Bart Simpson...

Enjoyment

MariaManuela’s pictures define the contrasts between the culture of the Far East and the western world’s pop-culture at the same time as they bring the two forms together. She derives her inspiration from classic Japanese woodcuts and their motifs of fantastically coiffured, cherry-lipsticked women, dressed in exquisitely patterned kimonos. But what she presents for the viewer are modern young Japanese women in mini-skirts, dancing among the cherry blossom and haiku poems.
Her Pop Icons are painted in vinyl on linen canvas – layer upon layer laboriously laid down to achieve the effect of a printed, japanned surface. The lines of the lips, the semi-circular contours of the eyes and the billowing coiffures are expressed against a monochromatic background. Her advertisement-like images combine mystique with unequivocal simplicity, setting a stage for all manner of different facial expressions – melancholy, pensive, jovial.
Born in Stockholm in 1959, Maria Manuela Vintilescu’s first serious encounter with art came at the age of seven. It was with fascination that she viewed Niki de Saint-Phalle’s giant sculpture She, then displayed at the Museum of Modern Art in Stockholm. After graduating from the Ecole Française in Stockholm, Maria took courses in painting, drawing and advertising. After ten years as a scene painter in the theatre, she turned to her own art. Her Pop Icons appeared for the first time in 1998. Two years later her Flower Year suite was exhibited in the Stockholm Spring Show at Liljevalch’s Gallery. These twelve female portraits were published in booklet form accompanied by Japanese haiku poetry interpreted by her father, Jan Vintilescu. It was his book that had first introduced this Japanese lyric form to a wider audience of Swedes in 1959.
Since the exhibition at Liljevalchs in 2000, her Pop Icons have been exposed at galeries, art fairs and museums in Europe and elsewhere, like in Tokyo Art Factory in Japan, at Villa Tamaris-Centre d’art in la Seyne-sur-Mer and at SOMA Museum of modern Art in Seoul.
In much the same way as the haiku moves us by the eloquence of its brevity, MariaManuela seeks through her pictures to convey situations, facial expressions and frames of mind by the most sparing and subtle of means. Her father had sought the same in rendering the haikus of the Japanese poet...

Alea Pinar Du Pre's original mixed media artworks portray human figures in a graphic pop-realist style. An enterprising autodidact merging technology and fine art, her vibrant contemporary pop-figurative artworks colorfully explore the territory between human reality and artificial reality. Her paintings portray the fact that our perceptions of solid reality are deceptively virtual. This unique collage is a part of her "Snapshot" series, as she explains:
"We consist of the same atoms, created billions of years ago in a supernova. And here we are living and breathing and experiencing life, and we think we are all so different. I think we are all the same, it’s just that are masks and poses are different. I love humanity and this game we are playing. With snapshot, I am trying to capture the unawareness of the fact that we are the greatest wonder of the universe".
This one-of-a-kind 47 inch high by 62 inch wide artwork depicts the portrait of a female figure. Pinar Du Pre's fusion of materials - acrylics, printed elements, and layers of gilt captured under an epoxy lens - represents the layered reality she aims to depict. The sides of this canvas are painted as a continuation of the front and it does not require framing. Pinar Du Pre has signed, titled, and dated this original artwork on the back of the canvas.

Building on the synthetic intensity of digital art, her figurative style depicts a familiar but warped daily life. Alea Pinar Du Pre has been influenced deeply by the traditional fine art and design practices of Kunstlerhaus and Wiener Werkstaette, two artist societies with roots in Vienna, Austria. Paying tribute to her main influences, Alea describes her style as "Jugendstil Pop-Art". But where Pop art was stimulated by the iconography of materialism and the mass culture of its time, her vision is more intimate in its subversive intent.
Alea Pinar Du Pre lives and works in Vienna, Austria. Her artworks are exhibited and collected in international hot spots across Europe, Asia, and North America.
