About the Item

Kevin Frank statement: For me, combining the techniques of the ancient Greco-Roman painters with those of the old and new masters help to create unique modern images. As with all encaustic work, viewing it in person is the best way to appreciate the immediacy of the medium, brought to life as light travels through the layers of pigmented beeswax. Each new painting is another opportunity for a technical experiment, whether the focus is on a new blending method or trying out a new color harmony. Ultimately, my work is not about pictorial invention to address social issues, etc., but rather to entertain the eye by recording, through observation and rendering, the play of light on a variety of materials. Maybe its function is to serve as a diversion from social issues - I leave that for the viewer to decide. My paintings are about painting and the joy of seeing.

Two Pears with Grapes and Shallot
By Randall Mooers
Located in Fairfield, CT
My paintings begin with a serious sense of play, both in the staging and the creating of the compositions. It is at this beginning stage that I operate under the Dadaist dictate that “anything can be art”, and at the same time I seek out a balanced and harmonious composition by way of line, shape, and color. I work according to my whimsy, sometimes seeking to assert some form of narrative however personal or ambiguous, and other times I am simply satisfied with the hint of a human presence. Once I have my compositions the paintings then very quickly become about work, a very labor intensive work that forces me to focus my mind and slow things down (which I feel is relevant especially in this day and age of high-speed everything). A great amount of effort is spent on trying to get to the highest level of finish that is possible according to my current skill level. For inspiration I have drawn from the past four centuries of object specific paintings, from the ontbijtjes (laid tables) of the 17th Century Dutch masters such as Willem Kalf, Jan Davidsz de Heem, Abraham van Beijeren...

The Race
By William John Hennessy
Located in New York, NY
William John Hennessy was born in Ireland. He came to America in 1849 with his mother and brother a year after his father had fled their homeland after taking part in the unsuccessful Young Ireland Party uprising. The Hennessys settled in New York, and when young William came of age, he decided upon a career as an artist. At the age of fifteen, he enrolled at the National Academy of Design, where he learned to draw from the antique, and the following year he was granted admission to the Academy’s life-drawing class. Hennessy first exhibited at the National Academy in 1857, starting a continuous run of appearances in their annuals that lasted until 1870, when he expatriated himself to Europe. During his time in America, Hennessy was principally known as a genre painter and prolific illustrator for such publications as Harper’s Weekly and a number of books, including illustrated works of William Cullen Bryant...
