About the Item
A bright colorful umbrella. And three reserved beachgoers who stare at fellow humans scantily dressed in bikinis and speedos. This was the inspiration for the painting. Perhaps not planning a day at the beach,
the three carefully perch on their beach towels - lest sand disturb their clothing.
Artist Carole Garland engages the viewer in questioning the story behind this threesome. Who are they and why did they turn up at the beach this day? Having fun with the umbrella Garland uses stencils to recreate a floral pattern and repeats the theme in the teach towel. She simplifies the background to keep focus on the subjects.
This contemporary 12"x16" Oil Painting on Wood Panel has wood sides which can serve as the frame. It is wired for hanging.
Carole Garland has served on the Board of Allied Artists of the Santa Monica Mountains & Seashore for over 20 years, on the Board of TAG Gallery and was a member of the Associate Artists Committee of the California Art Club. She is in numerous collections throughout the United States and has shown in gallery and museum venues throughout Southern California.

Carole Garland
Carole Garland, born and raised in Chicago, graduated from Knox College, Galesburg, Ill., She studied figure drawing and oil painting at the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of the Americas, Mexico City. After moving to Los Angeles she studied privately with Keith Finch, Venice. Concurrent with her art pursuits, Garland worked as a magazine editor, publicist, director's assistant, book editor, and sales executive. After a brief hiatus from painting, she looked to the outdoors for inspiration and began plein air watercolor studies with Don Blaisdell, UCLA.

Depicts Carole Garland reveling in a hot summer day at the Venice Beach. Colorful beach umbrellas shield the timid from the burning sun while sunbathers bask in the searing heat. Yellow and blue ribbons floating on the wind celebrate Venice’s chaos and its whimsy.
To focus the figure of a preteen who stands sentinel, Garland fades out the foreground sunbather on right and obfuscates the crouching man on left. The artist leads us to the groups of mysterious standing and sitting figures in the shadows and beyond. Garland’s collection of figurative work speaks to a contemporary sensibility in her approach to painting, while expressing a curiosity about the human form and an irrepressible concern for the human spirit.
