About the Item

Eugène Modeste LE POITTEVIN (Paris, 1806 - Paris, 1870) Diana Resting Original oil on canvas (E. Picart, 16 rue du Bac) H. 33 cm; W. 40.5 cm Red wax seal from the posthumous sale on the stretcher Circa 1845 Provenance: Sale from the artist's studio (April 9-12, 1872, Drouot, room 8, auctioneer Escribe, experts Francis Petit and Charles Mannheim), lot 29 in the catalog This is a very atypical subject for Eugène Le Poittevin. Although he was also an illustrator and caricaturist (see his lithographic collections of Diableries and his erotic and even pornographic drawings), the majority of his work represents scenes of people returning from fishing and seascapes on the Normandy coast, particularly the Caux coast. His style, romantic in the 1820s and 1830s (with works similar to those of Eugène Isabey or Auguste Biard, with whom he was friends and sometimes collaborated), gradually became more realistic thereafter. Here, the artist plunges into the 18th century and the Rococo world of Boucher or Lemoyne, with a curvaceous Diana, lying on the banks of a mountain stream and enjoying the spectacle of a butterfly and a dragonfly, which is more reminiscent of Aphrodite than the goddess of the hunt. Only the presence of a crescent-shaped object near her stomach confirms that this is indeed a representation of Diana. The mark of the canvas dealer, active at 16 rue du Bac between 1839 and 1849, allows us to date the work to the 1840s or the very early 1850s. The execution of the painting is very refined, particularly in the delicate impasto of the fabric surrounding Diana's arm. Poidevin, born in Poittevin, spent his childhood in Versailles, where his father held the position of "Assistant Curator of the Crown's Furniture." His artistic talents allowed him to join the studio of Louis Hersent around 1823, then that of Xavier Leprince (following the latter's death at the end of 1826, Le Poittevin moved there and even completed his master's last unfinished works). He was notably supported by Alexandre du Sommerard, a great collector and future founder of the Cluny Museum, who purchased several of his paintings. Le Poittevin narrowly failed to win the Prix de Rome for historical landscapes in 1829, which did not prevent him from exhibiting at the Salon in 1831, and continued to do so until his death. Like Charles Mozin (another student of Leprince) with Trouville, he was one of the first artists to establish the village of Etretat as a fashionable seaside resort; It was his friend Eugène Isabey who introduced him to the place, and he quickly acquired a house there, La Chauferette, where he notably hosted Gustave Courbet in 1869. The Poittevin was appointed official painter of the navy in 1849, following Louis-Ambroise Garneray, Louis-Philippe Crépin, and Théodore Gudin (the latter two appointed in 1830). Highly regarded in his time, he received several official awards at the Salons: a 1st Class medal in 1836, a 2nd Class medal in 1831 and 1848, and a 3rd Class medal in 1855. His Parisian studio was located at 5 Cité Trévise, in what is now the 9th arrondissement.
