About the Item

A fine luminous Maine harbor scene by contemporary American artist William R. Davis (1952-). Davis was born in Somerville, Massachusetts, and grew up in Hyannis Port where he took sailing lessons and became intimately acquainted with the marine landscape, inspiring much of his early work. He has become well-known in New England and across the country as a self-taught artist of luminist marine and landscape paintings, which capture the tranquil light of sunset and sunrise on the water. Davis’ style is influenced by the techniques of 19th century artists, and he describes it himself as “a conglomerate of a number of ideas I saw in other artists with my own refinements.” He is a founding member of the New American Luminists. Although best known for his marine subjects, Davis has shifted in the last few years to painting more landscapes on location in the tradition of plein air painting, partly influenced by his friendships with artists Joseph McGurl and Donald Demers. Oil on canvas, signed lower right, signed and title inscribed on verso “Maine Harbor Sunset,” and housed in a fine quality molded giltwood frame. Dimensions: 18 in H x 36 in W, actual; 26 in H x 44 in W x 3 in D. Ref: 55907
