This atmospheric mid-20th-century urban scene captures the lively character of a city street at dusk, animated by pedestrians, a horse-drawn carriage and figures gathered beneath the glow of a street lamp.
The artist approaches the scene with remarkable freedom, using vigorous, richly textured brushwork to suggest rather than precisely describe the surrounding architecture and figures. In the foreground, the horse and carriage emerge from a succession of deep browns, greys and blacks, while the silhouettes of pedestrians lead the eye toward the animated right side of the composition. Above them, a luminous sky painted in soft shades of pink, peach and yellow creates a striking contrast with the darker tones of the city below.
