“Spark” is a part of Alex Sher’s popular series REFLECTIONS - underwater photographs that could be almost mistaken for abstract paintings as they bring up recollections of masterpieces by Picasso, Dali or Gustav Klimt. In fact REFLECTIONS are straight photographic capturing of the water’s surface from below, with a submerged underwater camera. The photographs freeze natural momentary reflections in water surface - the unique kaleidoscopic fragmentations of human body into nearly unrecognizable forms. It is these bold accents of color, mesmerizing textures, dramatic lines, and distinctive distortions that make Sher’s works unique highly advisable masterpieces. Michael Jackson’s Luminograms are a very special piece of photographic art. Not a photograph in itself but a creative medium of its own. Each one is meticulously crafted by Michael in his darkroom. There are many structured stages to go through before the photographic paper can be hand developed and permanently fixed. Once Michael is happy with a finished Luminogram print it’s then toned in Selenium, which not only intensifies the prints tonality, but also increases the prints archival quality. Traditional photographic darkroom printing techniques have an unquestionable pedigree when it comes to the life expectancy of a photograph. Each Luminogram is unique and only one Silver Gelatin Print is produced of each image. The images reveal themselves with a 3D quality; viewed in the flesh the abstracted surreal forms within the paper come alive to the viewer. Michael Jackson’s Luminograms were exhibited for the first time at MMX Gallery in 2016; The Self Representation of Light exhibition and the following year at Photo London 2017 as well as next Photo London editions. We are the Earth is comprised of a photograph, acrylic paint, found objects in nature (bones, leaves, flowers, stones, crystals) and resin. The base materials for the work consist of a wooden paneled canvas that provides the platform for the adhesion of a rolled photographic canvas, a fine art photography print. The canvas print, in this case a double exposure digital photograph, is adhered to the wood using a clear acrylic varnish. Acrylic Paint is added along with the objects that I found in nature, which are all placed in a careful and meticulous fashion, finally cemented in resin. This specific piece of art was my first large scale piece of its kind, created in my studio in Brooklyn in 2019. This piece was inspired by the colors of my travels, the deserts, trees, mountains and sunsets. The human depicted is myself, it is a self-portrait captured in Great Sand Dunes...
