Art-ikythera Mechanism
Art-ikythera Mechanism

Art-ikythera Mechanism

By Terry Poulos

Located in Chicago, IL

Modern-day rendition of the world's oldest computer, the real-life Antikythera Mechanism (c. 205 BC). To our knowledge, the world's first outright, true sculpture that honors the world's oldest computer. The Antikythera Mechanism was a hand-powered astronomical calculator/planetarium consisting of anywhere from 24 to approximately 30 interlocking concentric gears and cogs. It was the most complex man-made instrument ever made until nearly the Renaissance, a fact which demands rewrite on the capabilities of the ancients. The ART-ikythera directly connects Archimedes to the invention of the mechanism by virtue of the symbol for Pi being inscribed on the sculpture base. Also inscribed is a spiral glyph, gleaned from the real-life Archimedes Palimpsest. Another accoutrement is the "eye of Archimedes," a concave mirror which when illuminated casts the illusion of a convex magnifying glass. The shape of the base is a square within a circle, symbolizing how Archimedes "squared the circle" to calculate Pi to the second decimal expansion (3.14). ART-ikythera is an esoteric code generator with clues and ciphers leading to a unique scientific perspective. SPECS: Total of 23 individual pieces, including spot-welded antique and vintage cast-iron gears, cogs and sprockets from used farm implements, antique brass all angle inclinometer (late 19th century), antique padlock...

Atlantian Continuum
Atlantian Continuum

Atlantian Continuum

By Terry Poulos

Located in Chicago, IL

A time traverse mechanism with antecedents in mythological Atlantis. Legend speaks of a Minoan connection to Atlantis. The time machine's fictional narrative builds upon the latest in archeological finds and a growing body of circumstantial evidence hinting of an advanced society lost to history. Perchance, dare say, one which developed methods defying the very forward arrow of the space time continuum. The Atlantian Continuum narrative tells of it originally being buried in volcanic ash (thereby preserved) after a catastrophic event altered the earth's magnetic polarity. A broken piece of Minoan-Atlantian continental land mass drifted thousands of miles south (based upon recent real-life scholarly posits), further protecting the device in the permafrost of the Antarctic. Metrics of time manipulation employed are aligned with many of Einstein‘s theories including Relativity, Light Quanta, entanglement, curvature of space and infinite time loops. The sculpture portends an original scientific perspective replete with esoteric symbols, equations, formulai and multi-dimensional geometry, all portending a series of radical posits. These heuristic, intuitive theories expand upon the latest cutting-edge scientific, mathematical and philosophical insights into "visiting" the past. SPECS: Vintage spot welded cast-iron gears, cogs, sprockets and other pieces of used farm implements. Total of 49 individual pieces, all antique and vintage dating as far back as 1920. Antique plano-convex glass ball clock housed in brass. Antique brass transit surveyor. Antique brass car oiler. Antique iron padlock...

Abstract Head Sculpture: 'Untitled'

By Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat

Located in New York, NY

The artistic collaboration of Kelly Bugden + Van Wifvat has produced a thought-provoking body of sculptures, paintings, and constructions. Nature, childhood memories, and everyday archetypes take shape in unexpected combinations of materials. The works emerged as the tactile and visual senses channeled the ritualistic power and materiality of selected artifacts. The resulting objects exist in a space between what they were originally and what they could become. A wheel, for example, is distorted as if seen through a prism. Their collaboration grew out of years of shaping materials into one-of-a-kind objects. Intuitively, the process of creating with their hands took an inward turn. Prism is a travelogue through memories and dreams, yielding abstract forms that capture moments of transformation. Van Wifvat grew up with eight siblings and studied sculpture and environmental design in Minneapolis at MCAD. In 1979, he opened a storefront art gallery to promote the work of local artists. The space featured printed materials—art books, periodicals, fanzines, and postcard’s. Wifvat moved to New York in 1983 to study at the Fashion Institute of Technology and Parsons. In 1987, he co-founded Van Gregory & Norton design studio, specializing in convex mirrors and curtain hardware...

Towards the sky (walnut wood bird abstract art zen sculpture pedestal minimal)

By Eric Tardif

Located in Quebec, Quebec

This steam-bent wooden sculpture is made of black walnut with a red sandstone base. The wood grain and the color are uniqueness of this sculpture. The wood has magnificent stripe patterns of paler and darker colors. The title, Toward the Sky, could have different meanings to humans during this hard period. One of them is to stay positive and keep hope. In some cultures, a heron symbolizes contemplation, vigilance, divine wisdom, and inner quietness. As a Chinese symbol, a heron represents strength, purity, patience and long life. In Africa, herons were thought to communicate with the Gods. The elegance and purity of the lines are reminiscent of Native American art from Western Canada. The elegance and purity of the lines are reminiscent of Native American art from Western Canada including that of Benjamin Chee...

Into the Light by John K. Grande A great contemplative, an artist who fuses light with colour, Fusako Ekuni has taken on the challenge of projecting our soul’s eternal perceptual connectivity to something very simple – light. Colours are treated with an instinct, the ritual inherent to Fusako Ekuni’s paintings involve the physics of the process itself. The slow process, the seeming point of emergence or disappearance these perpetual, eternal, changeable colour flows embody are less like paintings than beatific slow motion reifications of the physics of life… These paintings are homages to the pre-verbal universe, where the invisible forces of life - colour and light – interact magically, seemingly invisibly. The artist is the medium. Like the Spanish Surrealist Juan Miro, Fusako Ekuni is producing several paintings simultaneously. At different stages of completion, each painting can take months until the colours complete their harmonic journey into completion. The artist is an eternal seeker. For 18 years, Fusako Ekuni has moved from a traditional Japanese art style to explore a more fluid process that involves layering pure dry pigment and glue, placing these elements intuitively onto board to produce works that embody a feeling of slow flow… The colours relate as people do, one to the other, in a perpetual slow flow. A particular particularized, sub-atomic beingness associated with light is what results. This interest in the physics of light is ever present in Fusako Ekuni’s Into the Light series. Like James Turrell’s Roden Crater project in the Arizona Desert, the content in Fusako Ekuni’s art is ultimately this existential interaction between our eye’s perception and colour light compositions that always seem to be at a point of change. Fusako’s sense of light and colours as elements in and for themselves an artist works with recall the American painter Richard Pousette-Dart’s painterly explorations. Art becomes a source where the ideas are simply phenomena, visual and colourful. Light is the binding medium the colours interact with. The sense of simple presence and absence, of feelings and emotions likewise recalls Mark Rothko’s contemplative colour compositions. One colour next to another colour, overlapping or meeting, becomes a topography of feelings, of placement… it is all in these words, Fusako Ekuni’s sense of immediacy, of the moment, of how colour is perceived before we read its forms – as colour - in light.
