About the Item

after Lambert-Sigisbert ADAM (1700-1759) "Child with a crayfish" Sculpture made in bronze with a brownish green patina bears an apocryphal mark "Pigalle" 18th c. model created by Lambert Sigisbert Adam late 19th century edition cast France height 46 cm width 32,5 cm depth 23,5 cm The 18th c. model is of "Child with a crayfish" was created by Lambert Sigisbert Adam. A plaster cast was exhibited at the Salon of 1740, and was described as being cast in bronze. Other versions are held at the Victoria and Albert Museum, the Detroit Museum, and the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. "Child with the Crayfish" was also sculpted in marble and placed in the green room of the Château de Neuilly belonging to the Count of Argenson. Son of the sculptor Jacob Sigisbert Adam of Nancy, Lambert-Sigisbert Adam (1700-1759) was the eldest of brothers who were themselves sculptors. Trained by his father in Metz, and in Paris in the workshop of François Dumont, he won the Prix de Rome in 1723. Lambert-Sigisbert spent ten years at the French Academy in Rome. During this long stay in Rome, he acquired a technique and a sensitivity which linked him to a late Baroque. This is evidenced by his predilection for depicting water, through sculptures intended for fountains or allegories. In 1731 he won the competition for the Trevi Fountain in Rome, but Pope Clement XII did not follow the jury's choice and commissioned Nicola Salvi. Returning to Paris, Lambert-Sigisbert Adam worked on the famous waterfalls of the Château de Saint-Cloud (River Seine and RIver Marne), sculpted the central group of the Neptune basin of the Château de Versailles (Triumph of Neptune and Amphitrite, 1740), worked at the Palace of Sanssouci in Potsdam (Hunting and Fishing). For his reception at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1737, he presented a "Neptune calming the irritated waves".

Bronze Sculpture, "Child pinched by a crayfish", after Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
By Jean-Baptiste Pigalle
Located in Paris, FR
Bronze sculpture with a brown patina shaded in green signed Pigalle on the base, representing a child surprised by a crayfish's pinching. Tears are running down the cheeks of the naked child, sitting on a large shell, as he has just been pinched by a crayfish. The sculpture rests on a green marble base. Jean-Baptiste Pigalle is a great French sculptor born in Paris in 1714. At a very young age, he studied sculpture and became aware that his art was the meaning of his life. He moved to Italy in 1734 to perfect his technique. Then, he joined the Beaux-Arts, thanks to his work "Mercury attaching his heel" (1740) which had an immediate success. Several artists have a copy, painters represent it on their canvases, and a biscuit reduction is made by the manufacture of Sevres in 1770. Very quickly the orders multiplied and Mme de Pompadour took him under her wing. Juggling between baroque and classical styles, he made portraits of Diderot and Voltaire and then realized the famous funeral monuments...
