Autumnal San Francisco Cove and Surf with Whalers Shack circa 1900 Early California Tonalist painting of the San Francisco Coast and a Whalers Cabin. Possibly by D.A. Fisher (American, 1867-1940). Nocturnal paintings in the late 19th century were very popular in the United States. Condition is stellar and excellent with a period frame having a bit of age yellowing to the finish and the gold leaf filets are beaming. Image, 16"H x 22"D Frame, 22"H x 28"W x 2.5"D Fisher appears to have spent most of his career in Portland, Maine. "Stone Wall, Autumn, " George Smillie, Tonalist Fall Landscape View

By George Henry Smillie

Located in New York, NY

George Henry Smillie (1840 - 1921) Stone Wall, Autumn, 1879 Oil on canvas 9 1/2 x 15 inches Signed and dated lower right Provenance: Skinner, Boston, September 19, 2014, Lot 389 The career of George Smillie (1840-1921) followed the arc of nineteenth-century U.S. landscape painting. Trained in the Hudson River School tradition, Smillie successfully adapted to changing U.S. tastes and growing interest in European trends. In the late 1800s, he moved to tonalist paintings full of brushwork and influenced by French Barbizon painting. By the end of his career, he had lightened his palette to produce works similar to those of the U.S. impressionists. Yet in all styles, he was never less than competent, and his tonalist work is among the best produced in the United States. Like many nineteenth-century painters, George Smillie’s artistic training began with the study of printing. His father, James Smillie...

An exceptional tonalist landscape of Mount Tamalpais in Marin County, California by Scottish American artist William Keith (1838-1911). Keith was born in Aberdeenshire, Scotland and came to New York with his family and apprenticed to a wood engraver. In 1859, he moved to San Francisco where he worked for an engraver and later set up his own engraving business. Studying with Samuel Marsden Brookes in 1863, he was determined to become a painter. By August 1869 he had sold enough paintings to finance an extended journey to the East Coast and Europe including Dusseldorf, Germany throughout most of 1870, studying with Albert Flamm...

A fine tonalist landscape by American artist J. Francis Murphy (1853-1921). Murphy was born in Oswego, New York, he moved to Chicago in 1868, where his father was employed in the shipping industry. In Chicago, Murphy began working as a scene painter in a local theatre and was quickly promoted to lead his co-workers. Largely self-taught, his only training consisted of a few classes at the Chicago Academy of Design. There he became friends with Emil Carlsen and Theodore Robinson, and in 1873, Academy members elected him an Associate; a few weeks later, he became an Academician. His work was first exhibited at the National Academy of Design in 1876, where he was inducted eleven years later. He won numerous prizes, medals and honors for his landscape paintings, which are said to rank with those of George Inness, Alexander Wyant, and Homer Martin. Although his world was a limited one, his landscapes captured the forms of nature and the subtle nuances of the scene. Murphy was referred to as the "American Corot" because of his similarity to the painting style of Camille Corot (1796-1875), one of the original Barbizon...

PEDRO J. LEMOS (American, 1882-1954) FOOTBALL STATUE THROUGH THE TREES - UC BERKELEY 1921 - THE ORIGINAL YEARBOOK PASTEL Pastel drawing on colored paper 12 5/8 x 9 5/8 inches. Full signature in pastel, Pedro J Lemos. In good condition. A few bits of old tape at the corners, verso. THE 1921 UC BERKELEY YEARBOOK CONTAINED SEVERAL LEMOS PASTEL REPRODUCTIONS. Pedro de Lemos was an important proponent of the Arts and Crafts Movement. He produced some of the finest color woodcuts of the period as well as fine pastels, paintings and architecture. He was also an instructor and director of the Stanford University Art Department, From Wikipedia: Pedro Joseph de Lemos (25 May 1882 – 5 December 1954) was an American painter, printmaker, architect, illustrator, writer, lecturer, museum director and art educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Prior to about 1930 he used the simpler name Pedro Lemos or Pedro J. Lemos; between 1931 and 1933 he changed the family name to de Lemos, believing that he was related to the Count de Lemos (1576–1622), patron of Miguel de Cervantes. Much of his work was influenced by traditional Japanese woodblock printing and the Arts and Crafts Movement. He became prominent in the field of art education, and he designed several unusual buildings in Palo Alto and Carmel-by-the-Sea, California..... In 1911 he began teaching decorative design at the San Francisco Institute of Art.[8] In late 1912 he was one of the founders the California Society of Etchers, and the following year he started offering the Institute's first classes in printmaking. Some of his students, such as William S. Rice and John W. Winkler (1894-1979), went on to achieve significant fame as printmakers. He helped organize the California print...
