Edward Ranney is an internationally recognized photographer who has photographed the natural and man-altered landscape for over forty years. In 1980 Edward Ranney was awarded a grant from The Northern Arts Council of Great Britain to photograph throughout Cumbria, in Northern England, and to exhibit a selection of the resulting work at the Carlisle Museum and Art Gallery. The work extended into 1981, and the exhibition took place in 1982. This selection of photographs favors views of the open spaces of the hills, or fells, of Cumbria and Northumberland including Hadrian’s Wall, the fortified earthwork delimiting the northernmost Roman occupation of the British Isles. Born in 1942, educated at Yale University, internationally recognized landscape photographer Edward Ranney is the recipient of numerous awards and grants including NEA grants (1974 and 1982), a Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship (1977), and Fulbright Fellowships (1964 and 1993). In his studio, with large skylights, Rutger Hiemstra works on various subjects: still-lifes, portraits and, for example, large cloudy skies. In addition, he can also be found outside regularly, to make small 'plein-air' paintings. A few hours of sitting outside and painting a beautiful painting about it, that 'can not be better', according to Hiemstra. Rutger worked in Denmark, Switzerland, France and England, he also likes working in his own environment and is easily inspired by simple and daily 'things'. His self-tanned garden fence is also a wonderful subject. Inspiration enough, but time too short to draw and paint all the subjects that pass by. During our introduction to these artist, at the begin of 2017, it became clear how driven Rutger is. His own compiled book of artists that inspires him and of which he carefully studies the work is always within reach in his studio. When leaving, Rutger shows how he builds up his still lifes. A self-molded table top with potatoes 'scattered' on it. This is a while, downstairs in the living room, and here and there things change. Finally, if the composition really suits him, he will paint it. In his paintings, Rutger shows us how surprising his still-lifes, small, intimate or colorful and of great size can be. The material expression and atmosphere in the work of this artist is particularly well-suited in all formats. In January 2018 we had a big exhibition with his works, Dutch newspaper 'NRC' wrote an article about his works with the title: Anti-Depressive medication in paint by Rutger Hiemstra, we totally agree. For a child, Easter eggs are sensational. To begin with, they are bigger, if you are smaller. They have a nice shape: just not round. They shine and come in festive colors. And if you wipe off the wrapper there is no real egg, but chocolate. Later you are grown up and you know those things by now. Every year around Easter they are for sale with containers. They lie in front of the house and office. Easter egg? Yes Nice. But nothing special. Until you see them painted by Rutger Hiemstra (1975). He looks childishly at all those colorful glittering unround marbles - and he knows how to share his elation with it in a still life. Hiemstra makes Easter eggs unusual again, just as he also shows tompoucing, a glass of white wine or fresh mint, a pink cake...

Employing his mature and professional sense of composition, gained from a photography career that began at the age of 12, Griebsch here photographs a barren orchard and popular trees in a snowy white field above Sodus, New York. The shadows from the trees cast a dramatic shadow against the white field while the brown colored paved road provides a striking contrast in composition. When seen from above, the aerial landscape photograph looks like a minimalist abstract canvas. Artist statement: My aerial photographs present a sense of selective design applied to an extremely small and specific area of the vast landscape over which I fly. I find the need to make geographical sense of the earth, as well as the need to make visual sense of a photograph. I work with ambiguity of scale, the graphic quality of nature and with the hand of man upon the landscape. My images have an abstract and often painterly quality. They are at once factual and interpretive. Familiar landscapes take on a fresh context when airborne. The images require the confluence of several factors. There is the subject – a minuscule segment of the landscape that has captured my interest due to its sense of pattern, order or disarray. There is the essential contribution of light. There is the position and altitude of the airplane, and there is a need to capture the stillness and composition of the moment while moving over the subject at more than seventy miles per hour. My earliest aerial photographs were of ice and farmland, made close to home. The scope of the work opened up on solo flights across the continent in my vintage 1952 Cessna 170B. Those flights are made to find images of landscapes on a grander scale as well as unfamiliar opportunities to find images that take in a small detail. In my most recent work I’ve discovered what might be regarded as historical or documentary themes – some of the images of factories and quarries present relics of the country’s industrial past, while my newer images of the landscape and agriculture denote changes in the scale of farming and open space. The existing body of work, titled Aerias is comprised of more than two hundred images. Collections of my images have been placed in corporate and business settings and in private collections. I started photographing when I was twelve years old. My father taught me to fly when I was fourteen years old. Before taking off on my first solo flight, he admonished me not to go out of sight of the airport. I was soon out of his view and yet from where I was, the airport was always in sight. Such are the perceptions of a photographer who is airborne.
