Judah (Twelve Tribes of Israel)

Judah (Twelve Tribes of Israel)

By Salvador Dalí

Located in Laguna Beach, CA

Salvador Dalí is commonly regarded as one of the greatest Surrealist artists, whose personality was often displayed on his magnificent works of art. He practiced sculpting, advertising, printmaking, fashion, filmmaking, and more Dalí’s mischievousness and peculiar personality contributed to his status of an international celebrity, but he is better-known for his most distinct attribute: his mastery of art. Dalí’s significance and talent ranks him among the most versatile and prolific artists of the 20th century. “Judah” is part of a religion-based series of prints that depict the “Twelves Tribes of Israel”. Each etching represents one of the tribes. Levi, Zebulon, Joseph, and more are included in this series. The Twelve Tribes of Israel, in the Bible, are the Hebrew tribes which were named after sons or grandsons of Jacob. His name was later changed to Israel, and the Hebrew people became known as Israelites. The Tribe of Judah...

By David Yarrow

Located in Chicago, IL

The Book of Daniel Available in both Colour and Monochrome South Africa- 2022 Archival Pigment Print on 315gsm Hahnemühle Photo Rag Baryta Paper Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Edition Size: 20 Available sizes: 37 x 65 inches 56 x 98 inches All prints are on 315gsm Hahnemühle photo rag Baryta paper and varnished after processing to give both endurance and sheen. Each is signed, dated and numbered on the front. Price includes David Yarrow's custom black ash frame, white archival matting and protective UV acrylic. David Yarrow has built an unrivaled reputation for capturing the beauty of the planet’s remote landscapes, cultures and endangered animals. Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is now an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. Good creative ideas are only as good as the execution and when I conceived the idea of a literal photographic depiction of Daniel in a cave with wild lions, I recognised that pulling it off in the field would be as examining a production challenge as anything we had undertaken. The fact that we ended up with this image - a career highlight - is testimony to the skills of many South Africans with whom we collaborated on this project, none more so than Kevin Richardson, The Lion Whisperer. It was his behavioural understanding of specific lions within his famous sanctuary that gave me the confidence to even consider emotionally and financially investing in my mad idea. We have worked with each other for over eight years now and have developed a mutual trust. To build a cave and work from within that cave with wild lions is not a brief for a nascent relationship between artist and lion whisperer. We both agreed that pivotal to the success of the final image was that the lions we worked with should be interacting with each other and not me. If they were looking at me in the front of my heavy-duty cage, it would suggest encroachment and the involvement of another party. There were no third party witnesses to Daniel in the cave, other than spiritual ones. The lighting was also key and we needed time to look at various options to create the shaft of light. Without a light shaft, the sense of being in a cave would be diminished as opposed to amplified. It was this feature that would also add to the biblical vibe of the photograph which was essential; after all, we were working from the Bible. The low trajectory of the winter sun in Kevin’s conservation was in our favour and suggested that between 9 am and 10 am the light shaft could have the right angle so long as the hole in the cave’s ceiling was accurately positioned. The plan was that Daniel was the final piece in the jigsaw and we would only bring him in when all else was done, albeit I had a precise position for him in my mind. Kevin’s lions would not show any mercy to our modern-day Daniel and we would never suggest that this image was anything less than two pictures combined. Good things take time and I always knew this would be a three-day project for me on location. The predictability of the winter weather in the region was a key asset; the cloudless skies gave us identical light day after day and that then gave us optionality and time. But for others the project was a month, not three days, and I am full of gratitude for the artistic skills of those that made the cave and the attention to detail of the production team led by Theuns De Wet in Johannesburg and Tom Williams...

"Vayetse is probably the most handsome of Kevin Richardson’s lions and certainly the most famous. This image, taken in a flooded grassland after summer rains, is the strongest I have taken of him for a few years. The key was to be low to the lion, close to the lion and yet safe. This mandate would not therefore have been for everyone. Lying in water a foot deep inside a metal cage in an African swamp is not for the precious, but it was my only option. My legs itched for days after, but I guess that was a small price to pay for this image. It is important in these types of portraits for the eye contact of the lion to be emphatic. If the lion is not looking at me, the power of the image is materially reduced. It will be his eyes that tell us that Vayetse is focused, alert and on the hunt. That “Basic...

Well compensated financially, he was able to buy the best of materials and hire the country's most skilled foundry craftsmen. The foundry he hired was owned by Ferdinand Barbedienne, and casts from this period were stamped with the letters, FB. However, he did not make a lot of money from his work because he was such a perfectionist that often he would not sell his work because he thought it was not 'quite right'. In 1848, he declared bankruptcy, and his molds and plaster casts were sold along with the copyrights. Bayre's specialty was aroused, angry seeming wild game such as lions and tigers and elephants, but he also did equestrian groups and mythology figures. In order to do realistic depictions of animal anatomy, he spent much time at the Jardin de Plantes in Paris. His early training was as an apprentice to a metal engraver, but being drafted in the army in 1812, ended that education. In 1832, he had established his own studio, and unique at that time was his method of cold stamping his bronze casts, so that each one had a special number. He had his first entry, The Milo of Croton...

"This artwork combines two photographs - one taken in Borana, Kenya from above Pride Rock and the other taken 4000 km south at Kevin Richardson’s famous lion sanctuary where we created a massive replica of Pride Rock. It was a joint idea between my team and Kevin’s and fund raising for Kevin’s crusade was integral to the project. No better year to do this than in 2019 - the year Disney rereleased Lion King. We hope to raise a meaningful amount from this image for Kevin’s continual task of building awareness of the plight of the lion. The lion has no better friend in Africa. Pride Rock is the spiritual home of the movie and I wanted to work around this physical location in much the same way as Disney. e backdrop, 1,000 feet below, is quintessential East Africa, but the problem is that lion rarely venture onto the rock. at part of the job had to be done in South Africa. e angles and the light had to blend perfectly in order for the composite to work and we spent many hours planning at both locations. The biggest challenge was not the light - both images were taken with the camera pointing in the same direction about 45 minutes after sunrise. We knew if we gave it a few days we would get similar clear sunrises in both locations. A tougher issue was to have the same trajectory in both locations and we ended up hiring a cherry picker...

Born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966, he is an internationally acclaimed fine art photographer and Europe’s best selling wildlife photographer. "How close can a prime lens go to the subject? My limit would normally be working from 3ft with a 35m wide angle. In my experience, a good rule of thumb is that the minimum focal distance in feet should – in 75% of circumstances – be a tenth to a fifteenth of the numerical lens specification and then the maximum should be double that. For instance, I would not normally tend to use a 85m lens at a range of 6ft or less and equally why use a 35m at more than 6ft? So if there is the possibility of exploring focal distance at 1.5ft without a fisheye lens, the 20m lens has a chance and the Nikon 20m F1.4m is an outstanding lens. It gives contextual detail with comfortable “bokey” and it gives portrait detail with eye grabbing clarity. If that is all a bit technical, I apologise but photography is rarely not about maths. Of course it is about emotional employment and personal soul, but Ansel Adams was a mathematician first. Practitioners should understand how light enters the camera and also how lenses work. On social media, “The Hunger Games...
