Having previously held faculty positions at Denison University, Indiana University, and USC, Barnard is currently associate professor of art at Connecticut College in New London. Barnard’s work has been shown in solo and group exhibitions in Los Angeles, New York, Chicago, and New Haven, among other locations, and can be found in public and private collections nationally and internationally. His work is represented by Fred Giampietro Gallery in New Haven, where he and his partner live. artist statement In my work I focus on white supremacy’s relationship to the privileged spaces of my experiences, such as private art and educational institutions. Amidst widening gaps in wealth and opportunity, discussions about race, power, justice and representation—across visual culture broadly—seem more relevant than ever. In many of my compositions, which reference real sites, I have inserted fictional elements to raise questions about the allegiances and priorities of these institutions, as well as people—including myself—who have benefitted from, or continue to support them. The resulting works are representational, but through gestural passages and color and surface manipulation, I aim to suggest instability, corrosion and decay. In the end, I strive to make engaging paintings that suggest dissonance and ambivalence, that entice and challenge viewers, just as painting them does for me. These paintings are rooted in my contemplating Whiteness and emerge from wrestling with the politics of painting—the connections and gaps between painting and lived experience. They also reflect: a love of paint, the act of painting, and the power of the painted image; a regard for practitioners past and present, as well as those for whom practice has not been possible; and an admission of painting’s complicity with hegemonic power. As always, my process remains driven by questions. In this case, questions like: What role does painting play in the face of concrete social crises? How can my paintings respectfully incorporate¬—rather than exploit—relevant and thought-provoking content and imagery? What does it mean to think about racism, dehumanization, injustice, etc., and then to paint such pictures, and in particular as a straight, White man? These questions and this body of work owe much to the work of others, and most acutely to four scholars’ books in particular: The History of White People, by Nell Irvin Painter; Ebony and Ivy: Race, Slavery, and the Troubled History of America’s Universities by Craig Steven Wilder; The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness, by Michelle Alexander; and White Rage, by Carol Anderson...

Jacques Maret 1900-1980 Jacques Maret was born on 27th September 1900 in Nantua, France. He was a French painter, illustrator, engraver and poet. This painting is signed , lower right. Maret studied under the French painter, sculptor and engraver Victor Prouvé and attended the Académie Julian, Paris, in the early 1920's when it was located in Montmartre. Maret was mobilized during both WW1 and WW2 - and was taken prisoner during WW2. Maret's illustrations were published in the surrealist and poetic magazine 'Feuillets Inutiles' between 1928 and 1977. The other contributors included the photographer Georges Pillement, the avant-garde poet and dramatist Pierre Albert-Birot, the journalist and poet Pierre Andreu, the cubist painter and teacher André Lhote and the Belgian sculptor Michel Seuphor. The French poet Max Jacob described Maret as 'a very great painter' in 1933. The poet André Salmon has been quoted as saying (of Maret) 'Il a beaucoup inventé, on il a beaucoup pillé avant la célébrité' (He invented a lot, and was frequently plundered before he became famous). The Bénézit Dictionary of Artists describes Maret as 'one of the greatest scholarly engravers of his time' Maret exhibited at various galleries in France including Galerie Zak - a Parisian art gallery (1928-60) that specialised in modern European and South American art; Galerie de Paris and the 'Salon des Tuileries' was an annual art exhibition of painting and sculpture, organized in opposition to the Academy's official Salon system, that ran from 1923 until the early 1950s. Martha Mans lavender gray white blue green yellow peach brown framed in brown frame The painting process has been an evolving experience for me from the time I was very young and first started painting in oil until now. Each stage had to be experienced and has led to a deeper understanding of what my expression in paint is all about. Painting traditional realism with good design as an important element was where I began. Now, the evolution of my painting process has brought me to a point in which the subject, the texture of the oil medium and the physical application of the brushstrokes have become profoundly intertwined. All are so necessary to the finished work that if one were to be taken away the work would be left incomplete. My hope is that the synthesis of the subject, design, expressive brush strokes and the texture of the paint come together to create a work of art in which the viewer experiences all of these elements at once in a powerful statement on canvas. “New Mexico is a land of earthy colors and textures. Rocks, dirt, twiggy plants, reds and ochres against blue grays, dry, wet, cold, hot, mostly hard and rough create a movement in visual and tactile rhythms that surround me. There are times when I am standing in the New Mexico landscape on a warm day when I want to lay down and embrace it. I can’t help but be madly in love with the textures of everything around me. I am drawn to the irresistible forces that seem to bring me closer to the earth. The more I experience these textural qualities of the land, the more I am compelled to use them to express what I want to say. “ Martha was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended Carlow University and received a degree in art and art education. Later she studied art at the Maryland Institute College of Art and the University of Southern California. At the beginning of her career she worked as an art teacher and art department head in Maryland and California. After becoming a full-time artist she taught watercolor and oil painting workshops in the United States and abroad. After moving to Colorado she became a master instructor for a branch of the Art Students League in Colorado Springs and then set up her own classes in her studio where she presently teaches on a weekly basis. She was director for many years of large adventure workshops combining painting and exploring. Some of these adventures include Ghost Ranch, New Mexico, where Georgia O’Keefe painted, a yearly excursion on a Clipper Ship in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas stopping at many ports to paint and an exciting workshop in Salvador, Brazil, painting the colorful region and people there. It was due to these painting trips on which the artists had to carry around all their painting equipment that she put together a compact painting travel kit that she marketed and that many plein air artists use as they travel to their many painting locations. Martha’s work has been featured in many art publications such as: Southwest Art Magazine, Artist’s Magazine, Watercolor Artist’s Magazine and Art Collector’s Magazine. Her work has been used in several books on painting; “Making Your Watercolors Look Professional,” by Carole Katchen, The Best of Watercolor Series, Rockport, Press, “How to Paint Better Watercolor Paintings,” by Jerald Brommer and Jerald Brommer’s Art Education Posters for High Schools. Her work has received many awards in national juried competitions including numerous best of shows awards.
