Artist Commentary: As an artist, I just love being able to take creative license and paint what my mood dictates. The photo reference for this painting was of New England waters and the day I painted this it is was cold and rainy. I was looking for warmth, not 20 degree temps! I took out my set of pastels that remind me of warmer climates and painted this in that palette. The photographer, a young Buddhist monk named Syoin Kajii, watches the water patiently, waiting for a moment of surprise. The photographs are truly stunning. About Syoin Kajii: Born in Niigata, Japan, Kajii currently lives and works as a artist and Buddhist monk on Sado Island. Syion Kajii, graduated from Koyasan University in Mikkyo, in esoteric Buddhism, in 1999. He has been taking photographs since the age of 16, and after having served his Buddhist apprenticeship at Koyasan (Mt. Koya) from 1995 to 1999, Kajii travelled around the world, to places such as Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, Papua New Guinea, and the U.K. taking pictures. While working as a monk of the Singon sect in Sado Island, he has been actively working as a photographer. Janet Jennings is known for her luminous oil & watercolor paintings. After working for Lawrence Rubin at Knoedler Contemporary Art, Jennings maintained a studio at Waverly Studios in New York City. She began as a Color Field painter, working on canvas and linen. Janet moved to Amagansett, NY in 1981 and switched her focus to landscape painting. Her career path led her to teach at The Parrish Art Museum, Guild Hall & The Victor D’amico Institute of Art. From 1993 to 1998, she was the Chair of the Andy Warhol Visual Arts Preserve Program. Jennings maintains ties to the art community as an educator and curator. She is a member of the East Hampton Arts Council, an advocacy group for performing and visual artists of East Hampton. Ms. Jennings maintains a painting studio in East Hampton and currently teaches oil and watercolor classes. In 1997, she was a founding member of CMEE, The Children’s Museum of the East End. Working with Lee Skolnick and JoAnn Secor, she was an exhibit designer and fabricator for “Time and Place, Light and Space”, the initial installation at Guild Hall, which launched CMEE. She was a lead designer for the permanent exhibition installation of CMEE, located in Bridgehampton, NY. Jennings received her BFA from the University of Dayton and attended The Dayton Art Institute, Antioch College and The Art Students League. Her paintings are in numerous corporate and private collections worldwide.
