Born in Stockholm on December 28, 1898, he was raised in an artistic and scientific environment. His mother, Thérèse Ekblom, was herself a highly regarded botanical and scientific illustrator, which heavily influenced Sven’s early artistic development and disciplined approach to painting. Ekblom received his formal artistic training at the Stockholm Art School (Konstfack). There, he mastered classical composition and refined his work across multiple mediums, working predominantly in watercolors, gouache, and oil paints.
In 1925, Ekblom accepted a position as an illustrator and cartoonist at the Swedish Museum of Natural History (Naturhistoriska riksmuseet) in Stockholm. This tenure lasted for decades and defined much of his public-facing career. His sharp eye for anatomy and textures made him a sought-after commercial and academic illustrator.
