A fine and early rustic primitive bench fashioned from a thick and expressive slab of old-growth American chestnut and hand-carved through-doweled splaying legs.

The wood looks to be chestnut, which would indicate creation of this piece in the 1930s or earlier, as a blight wiped out nearly all American chestnut trees by the 1940s.
