How Much are Landscape Paintings On Canvas?
Finding the Right Paintings for You
Painting is an art form that has spanned innumerable cultures, with artists using the medium to tell stories, explore and communicate ideas and express themselves. To bring abstract paintings, landscape paintings, still-life paintings and other original paintings into your home is to celebrate and share in the long tradition of this discipline.
When we look at paintings, particularly those that originated in the past, we learn about history, other cultures and countries of the world. Like every other work of art, paintings — whether they are contemporary creations or works that were made during the 19th century — can often help us clearly see and understand the world around us in a meaningful and interesting way.
Cave walls were the canvases for what were arguably the world’s first landscape paintings, which depict natural scenery through art. Portrait paintings and drawings, which, along with sculpture, were how someone’s appearance was recorded prior to the advent of photography, are at least as old as Ancient Egypt. In the Netherlands, landscapes were a major theme for painters as early as the 1500s. Later, artists in Greece, Rome and elsewhere created vast wall paintings to decorate stately homes, churches and tombs.
Today, creating a wall of art is a wonderful way to enhance your space, showcase beautiful pieces and tie an interior design together.
No matter your preference, whether you favor Post-Impressionist paintings, animal paintings, Surrealism, Pop art or another movement or specific period, arranging art on a blank wall allows you to evoke emotions in a room while also showing off your tastes and interests. A symmetrical wall arrangement may comprise a grid of four to six pieces or, for an odd number of works, a horizontal row. Asymmetrical arrangements, which may be small clusters of art or large, salon-style gallery walls, have a more collected and eclectic feel.
Download the 1stDibs app, which includes a handy “View on Wall” feature that allows you to see how a particular artwork will look on a particular wall, and read about how to arrange wall art. And if you’re searching for the perfect palette for your interior design project, what better place to turn than to the art world’s masters of color?
On 1stDibs, you’ll find an expansive collection of paintings and other fine art for your home or office. Browse abstract paintings, portrait paintings, paintings by emerging artists and more today.
- What defines landscape painting?1 Answer1stDibs ExpertSeptember 25, 2019
Landscape paintings depict natural scenery.
- 1stDibs ExpertMarch 22, 2022Yes, Grandma Moses sometimes painted on canvas. The American folk artist preferred to work with whatever she had available to her. At times this meant producing works on fiberboard rather than canvas. Shop a selection of Grandma Moses art on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertFebruary 22, 2021Two types of paint, oil and acrylic, are the most commonly used mediums on canvas. Acrylic is adored for its quick-drying properties, while others prefer oil paint for its thick, luscious consistency.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 15, 2024To tell if a canvas painting is real, research using trusted online resources and published references. Learning about the artist and the type of work they produced can help you spot characteristics of their style, such as the types of brushstrokes they commonly employed and how and where they signed their work. You can then use these aspects as criteria for evaluating your painting. Another option is to have a certified appraiser or knowledgeable art dealer inspect your piece and give you an opinion on its likely authenticity. Find a large collection of canvas paintings on 1stDibs.
- Lilac Gallery Ltd.March 18, 2021The word 'Landscape' regarding the art could potentially refer to one of two things. The first one is that the proportions of the artwork are in a 'rectangular' shape and the largest side has to be placed horizontally. That would be the difference between 'Portrait' (Vertical) vs. 'Landscape' (Horizontal) artwork. And the second meaning could be of what the subject is been referred to. A painting of a 'Landscape' usually portrays a scene in the countryside, it could include elements like mountains, rivers, trees, figures and animals, sky and clouds, and some other elements that are not descriptive of an urban location as this would be referred as a 'Cityscape'
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Landscape paintings are typically grouped into one of three concepts: representational, impressionistic and abstract. Representational is a realistic depiction of a landscape, impressionistic portrays a more subjective look at a landscape and abstract plays with the landscape using a wide range of colors and shapes. Find a range of landscape painting styles on 1stDibs.
- 1stDibs ExpertMay 30, 2024Technically, you can put a canvas painting in a glass frame. However, many experts advise against it. Paintings executed on canvas typically do not need the protection of glass, and a glass front on a frame can actually make it more difficult to admire the brushwork and fine details of a piece. On 1stDibs, explore a diverse assortment of paintings.
- 1stDibs ExpertSeptember 16, 2024To know if your canvas painting is worth money, you can take one of two approaches. One option is to conduct research using trusted online resources. By looking to see how much other paintings by the artist have sold for in the past, you can get a rough idea of how much your painting may be worth. However, other factors, such as the size and condition, will also impact the potential value. As a result, you may wish to use the services of a certified appraiser or experienced art dealer to get a more accurate idea of how much your painting is worth. On 1stDibs, find a wide variety of canvas paintings.
- 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022Dutch landscape paintings were important because of their rich associations with God, nature, agriculture and pride in one’s nation. The colors and textures used captured a snippet of the patrons' everyday lives and values. On 1stDibs, find a collection of landscape paintings from some of the world’s top sellers.
- 1stDibs ExpertOctober 7, 2024The difference between Eastern and Western landscape paintings is traditionally in how artists seek to represent natural settings. Over hundreds of years, Western artists strived to make landscape paintings more realistic by incorporating techniques like linear and atmospheric perspective. In the East, landscape artists focused more on showing the rich details that give natural environments their beauty rather than on making their works appear three-dimensional through perspective. On 1stDibs, shop a wide range of landscape paintings.
- 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 27, 2025Jackson Pollock is the American artist famous for laying the canvas on the floor and dripping the paint from a bucket using a stick. He called this innovative technique "drip painting." Pollock stood at the forefront of Abstract Expressionism to the point that his name has become nearly synonymous with the movement. He was deeply respected by his contemporaries, and Pollock’s paintings, prints and other art — as well as his commitment to the work — influenced artists worldwide. - 1stDibs ExpertJanuary 27, 2025The famous artist and co-founder of the Hudson River School artists who painted historical paintings and romantic landscapes was Thomas Cole. Born in England, he immigrated to the U.S. in 1818. During a trip to the Catskills, he first began producing paintings, and his work helped establish the tradition of landscape art in America.
