Longines Yellow Gold Enamel Dial Military Chronograph Manual Watch from 1933
By Longines
Located in Long Beach, CA
FACTORY / HOUSE: Longines Watch Company STYLE / REFERENCE: Campaign Style / Chronograph METAL / MATERIAL: 14 Kt. Solid Gold DIMENSIONS: Length 41mm X Diameter 39mm CIRCA / YEAR: 1933 MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Manual Winding / 17 Jewels DIAL / HANDS: Original Kiln Fired Enamel / Breguet Style / Breguet Blued Hands ATTACHMENT / LENGTH: Leather, 19mm / Medium Length WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement. LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This is a fantastic and rare watch. It is the largest Longines wrist chronograph produced at the time. The case has a coin edge, hinged back and bezel and a beautiful cuvette stating its provenance. The movement is in excellent condition and the steel work has Anglage finishing. This rare watch is running fine and you can wear it and use it to count off the minutes left on your parking meter. The Company continued to grow and prosper throughout the 19th century. During the American Civil War, they supplied watches to the military, and of course they grew because of this association. In 1885, they moved their headquarters to Waltham, Massachusetts, and changed their name to the American Waltham Watch Company. Waltham was a major exhibitor at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The company's exhibit at the exposition was housed in a large pavilion that was designed to resemble a factory. The pavilion was filled with watches of all shapes and sizes, as well as machinery used in the manufacturing process. The exhibit was a major success, and it helped to raise the profile of Waltham watches around the world. Amongst the visitors at the exhibition was a contingent from Switzerland. When they realized what Waltham was doing, they quickly understood that their methods were outdated and soon enough they would be a country unable to compete. They also went to the Waltham factory for a visit after the exhibition. It is said that they purchased a few of Waltham’s higher grade movements. The director of the factory said he would have them “adjusted” before they left, but they said it was not necessary. When they arrived back in Switzerland, they checked them and were shocked at the level of quality and accuracy. This prompted them to buy some of the equipment that Waltham was using so they could start building better watches that were less expensive and more accurate. Some of that machinery ended up in the small town of Schaffhausen and became The International Watch Company. They are still in business today making exceptional watches. The military, for any nation, is a powerful source of revenue for industrial contracts. So, any industry would prosper during war and Waltham continued to be a supplier to the military for over 100 years. Through WW 1...

Longines Rare "Campaign" Style 18Kt. with Enamel Dial and Sweep Second From 1922
By Longines
Located in Long Beach, CA
FACTORY / HOUSE: Longines Watch Company STYLE / REFERENCE: Campaign / Military Style METAL / MATERIAL: 18Kt Yellow Gold CIRCA / YEAR: 1922 DIMENSIONS / SIZE: Length 40mm X Diameter 34mm MOVEMENT / CALIBER: Manual Winding / 15 Jewels / Sweep Seconds DIAL / HANDS: Flawless Factory Original Kiln Fired Enamel Dial with Arabic Numeral / Original Blued Steel Hands ATTACHMENT / LENGTH: Leather, 15mm / Regular Length WARRANTY: 18 months on the movement LIFETIME SERVICE COMMITMENT This is rare watch the legendary house of Longines. We seldom see these early Longines Campaign Style watches. And, never in this fine condition. The dial on this watch was likely produced for them, by the worlds finest Swiss Dial House known as Stern Freres. In the early 1930's due to the Great Depression Patek Philippe, the worlds most famous watch company filed for bankruptcy. Stern purchased the Patek Philippe and still owns the marque today. This watch is still fitted with its original blued steel screws holding in the strap bars attaching the strap. It also appears to have the original crown and the hands are done in the classic Breguet Moon Style, with Breguet numbers as well. If you are a serious collector this is a watch worth considering. The company was founded in 1832 by Auguste Agassiz, a Swiss watchmaker. He was also the brother of renowned biologist Louis Agassiz. Agassiz started the company with two partners, lawyers Henri Raiguel and Florian Morel. The company's original name was Raiguel Jeune & Cie. In 1846, Raigeul and Morel retired from the watch industry, leaving Agassiz as sole company head. Several years later, Agassiz brought in his bright, enterprising nephew, trained economist Ernest Francillon, into the business. Francillon was the mastermind behind several impressive innovations that would distinguish the company from its competitors. In 1880, Francillon trademarked the Longines name and its winged hourglass logo. The winged hourglass is a symbol of precision and timekeeping, and it has become one of the most recognizable logos in the watch industry. In 1912, Longines became the official timekeeper of the Olympic Games. The company has held this position ever since, and it has been involved in every Olympic Games since then. Longines has also been the official timekeeper of many other major sporting events, including the World Championships in Athletics, the Formula One World Championship, and the America's Cup. In 1931, Longines invented the Lindbergh Hour Angle watch...

To tell if a Longines watch is real, get a magnifying glass and look for small numbers positioned below the 6 o'clock hour marker. Featured on most of the brand's luxury timepieces, these numbers correspond to the movement and plate numbers. By comparing these numbers to information published on trusted online resources, you can spot inconsistencies that may indicate your piece is a replica. If you don't see any numbers, find out if Longines added them to your particular watch. If so, the lack of numbers may mean your watch is counterfeit. Another method of authenticating is to inspect the entire watch for uneven finishes, low-quality hardware or other imperfections, as authentic Longines watches will be free of these types of defects. Consult a certified appraiser or other knowledgeable expert for a professional opinion on your watch's authenticity. Find a diverse assortment of Longines watches on 1stDibs.

How Longines and Rolex compare is that both watchmakers are trusted names in the luxury market. Rolex is known for its precision and unflagging pursuit of innovation. In 1926, the company introduced the aptly named Oyster model. With a screw-down crown and case back, both fitted with rubber gaskets, this was the first truly waterproof watch. Other iconic Rolex watches include the Submariner, the DateJust, the Daytona and the Air King. Longines is known for creating some of the most technically innovative and attractive timepieces in the world. Fans of the timepieces have included Humphrey Bogart, Albert Einstein, Richard Byrd and Charles Lindbergh, and the company's vintage watches are now sought after by collectors and anyone desiring to wear a high-grade wristwatch. When shopping for a watch, you should think about what you’re looking for in this type of accessory. This includes the power reserve, materials, accuracy, craftsmanship, where it was manufactured and more. If it’s your first watch, you may wish to consider whether or not you’d prefer a pre-owned model. Buying a new, never-worn watch enables you to build a history with it that isn’t shared by anyone else, but the greatest advantage to buying a pre-owned watch is that it opens up a wider range of models to consider, including rare ones that have been discontinued.
