Questions About Start Of The Dance
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 26, 2024
Surrealism started in the 1920s, following the conclusion of World War I. Surrealist artists were informed by the Dada movement, which originated in 1916 in Zurich and embraced absurdity over the logic that had propelled modernity into violence. Some of the Surrealists had witnessed this firsthand, such as Max Ernst, who served in the trenches during World War I, and Salvador Dalí, whose otherworldly paintings and other work responded to the dawning civil war in Spain. On 1stDibs, explore a range of Surrealist art.

  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 22, 2024
Surrealism started in the 1920s. It emerged with dreamlike and uncanny imagery guided by a variety of techniques — such as automatic drawing, which can be likened to a stream of consciousness — to channel psychological experiences. Although Surrealism was a groundbreaking approach for European art, its practitioners were inspired by Indigenous art and ancient mysticism to reenvision how sculptures, paintings, prints, performance art and more could respond to the unsettled world around them. Surrealist artists were also informed by the Dada movement, which originated in 1916 in Zurich and embraced absurdity over the logic that had propelled modernity into violence. Some of the Surrealists had witnessed this firsthand, such as Max Ernst, who served in the trenches during World War I, and Salvador Dalí, whose otherworldly paintings and other work responded to the dawning civil war in Spain. Other key artists associated with the revolutionary art and literary movement included Man Ray, Joan Miró, René Magritte, Yves Tanguy, Frida Kahlo and Meret Oppenheim. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Surrealist art.

Pop art started because artists sought to react to the mass consumerism of the 1950s with the goal of putting popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture. Works associated with Pop art are distinguished by their bold imagery, bright colors and seemingly commonplace subject matter. Practitioners endeavored to challenge the status quo. Pop artists broke with the perceived elitism of the previously dominant Abstract Expressionism and made pointed statements about current events. Richard Hamilton's 1956 collage ‘Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?’ is widely believed to have kickstarted this unconventional new style, but Pop art is perhaps most closely identified with American Pop artists Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein. On 1stDibs, explore a collection of Pop art.

Thomasville began making furniture in 1904 in the town of Thomasville, North Carolina. Thomasville’s initial offerings were limited to one item — the Thomasville chair — and it was known in its early days as the Thomasville Chair Company. People loved Thomasville chairs so much that demand surged for more types of seating and other furnishings. In 1922, there was even a 13-foot replica of the original chair design installed in the town square. Dubbed "The Big Chair," it was rebuilt in 1951 to a height of 30 feet and still serves as the town's most notable landmark. Shop a selection of Thomasville furniture on 1stDibs.

Artists in the United Kingdom started the Pop art movement as a reaction, both positive and critical, to the period's consumerism. Its goal was to put popular culture on the same level as so-called high culture. London-born artist Richard Hamilton is widely believed to have had a pioneering role in Pop art, which drew on imagery from popular culture - comic books, advertising, product packaging and other commercial media - to create paintings and sculptures that celebrated ordinary life in the most literal way. Although British artists launched the movement, they were soon overshadowed by their American counterparts. Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein and Rosalyn Drexler are some of the American artists associated with the history of Pop art. Find original Pop art on 1stDibs.
