The Conversation II
Located in Greenwich, CT
Signed lower left Elizabeth Higgins (Canadian, b. 1960) Elizabeth Higgins describes herself as an abstract figurative and landscape painter. Everything around her serves as a potential subject, an inspiration to begin a painting. Fidelity to the landscape, the figure, or the still life is relative, as she isn’t interested in literal depictions; instead, it’s the abstract relationships of these shapes and colors, the abstract pictorial design that drives her work. Higgins’ paintings are rooted in the tradition stemming from Courbet, Derain, Bonnard, Matisse, Morandi, German Expressionism, and the Canadian Group of Seven (also known as the Algonquin School of landscape painters, 1920–1933). She is influenced by the work of her artist-teachers Paul Resika—himself a student of Hans Hofmann—and Robert De Niro, Sr. (1922-1993), as well as the paintings of contemporary artist Peter Doig. Her artistic evolution stretches across this continuum. It is the “in-between”, the hovering between representation and abstraction, that interests her, not the labeling effect of details; instead, she aims directly at the spirit of the painting—of making something come to life. John Goodrich wrote in her catalog essay, “Elizabeth Higgins’ direct brushwork and simplified forms suggest an energy, but crucially, reveal a painter who knows the power of color…” Elizabeth Higgins was born in Toronto, Canada, in 1960. As a Helena...

Shepherd in the Pyrenees Spain oil on canvas painting spanish landscape Europe
By Enric Porta Mestre
Located in Barcelona, Barcelona
Title: Shepherd in the Pyrenees Artist: Enric Porta i Mestre (1898–1993) Technique: Oil on canvas Style: Post-Impressionism with Expressionist influences Dimensions: Unframed: 23.6 x 31.9 in Framed: 29.9 x 38.2 in Signature: Signed in the lower right corner as "E. Porta". Date: 1956 (according to the inscription on the back). DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK Shepherd in the Pyrenees by Enric Porta i Mestre depicts a rural scene with a striking sense of introspection and evocative charm. The painting portrays a shepherd tending to his flock amidst the mountainous landscape typical of the Catalan Pyrenees. The composition captures the serenity and beauty of nature through vibrant colors and dynamic brushstrokes. The work reflects a Post-Impressionist style with loose, bold strokes and vivid tones, combined with Expressionist influences in its ability to evoke emotions beyond the physical depiction. The energetic and textured brushwork infuses the painting with a lively rhythm, while the rich palette of greens and blues immerses the viewer in the landscape's tranquil atmosphere. In this piece, Porta i Mestre showcases a mastery of color and light, illustrating his deep connection to his homeland and its rural life, which served as a source of inspiration throughout his career. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Enric Porta i Mestre (La Pobla de Segur, 1898–1993) was a Catalan painter known for his landscapes, still lifes, and costumbrist depictions. Trained in Lleida and Barcelona, Porta debuted in 1922 with an exhibition in the Catalan capital. He later moved to Paris to further his artistic studies, where he connected with avant-garde artists such as Miquel Villà...

For artist Trish Nickell, life took a dramatic turn when she and her husband moved to Paris in 1996. Their planned year in France extended to a stay of 12 years. When they returned in 2008, they settled in Portland, Oregon, influencing Nickell to include views of the Northwest coast along with the French landscapes already inspiring her. She was born in Dallas, and grew up in the Park Cities, graduating from Highland Park High School in 1965. In 1968, Nickell earned a BA from the University of North Texas followed by an MA in 1986 and an MFA from The University of Dallas in 1988. Independent study with artist John Evans was crucial to her development. Of her most recent work, Trish Nickell says, “My new paintings begin in the sensation described by Pierre Bonnard, ‘of being overwhelmed by the beauty of Nature.’ The views I choose to depict are derived from moments when Nature presents itself to me, completely unsolicited, in a certain light and with a certain combination of exploding colors. These views have a sense of solitude that liberates the imagination and invites meditation; I take Nature’s beauty and expansiveness into myself and allow it to change and transform my work.” Trish Nickell Curriculum Vitae: Education: 1988 MFA, University of Dallas, Irving, Texas 1986 MA, University of Dallas, Irving, Texas 1968 BA, University of North Texas, Denton, Texas Solo Exhibitions: 2018 Trish Nickell: Points of View, Valley House...
