In 1912, as the result of a bout of paralysis, he gave up walking for good and used a wheelchair. Soon, unable to hold his paintbrushes himself, he had them attached to his wrists.

Within a short time, however, he was wheelchair-bound. He died in Forcalquier in March 1953 and was buried in Cimiez.
