Chicago 48
By Aaron Siskind
Located in Toronto, Ontario
Aaron Siskind (1903-1992) started his career as a documentary photographer and a member of the Photo League. He and his colleagues were interested in photography as a tool to record and address social inequalities of the day. Many of his images from the 1930's for example explored life in Harlem. In the early 1940's Siskind drifted away from social depictions preferring to capture images that focused on textures and shapes. Images of advertising fragments, graffiti and sidewalks become engaging and hypnotic because of their abstract qualities rather than the subject matter. As a result he became one of the first "abstract" photographers. Siskind's aesthetic and sensibility evolved parallel to the Abstract Expressionist movement. As a result he was the only photographer to be included in the groundbreaking 9th Street Art...

"Within Reach" - Unique silver gelatin print (mixed process photogram); Made with ice, flowers, sand, glitter, and more. BRAND NEW, printed on Fomatone MG 133, a beautiful, slightly textured chamois paper, in April 2023. [This one-of-a-kind black-and-white photograph is a slightly weird size, as it was made with a sheet of paper that had previously been cut for a test strip. The width is actually 8 1/16"] After falling into photography by way of eastern religions a lifetime ago, the latter quickly found its way into my work, and never left. I think of both my (covid-born) cameraless photographs and my film-based silver gelatin prints as subconscious self-portraits or spiritual landscapes...

Located in New York, NY
UPDATE - This NEWLY FRAMED unique silver gelatin print (photogram made sans enlarger) just returned from its in-person debut, via the recent "(S)Light of Hand" exhibition, at The Photographer's Eye Collective (Escondido, CA), which was juried by Ann Jastrab, Executive Director of Center for Photographic Art (CPA in Carmel, CA). [This black-and-white cameraless photograph had its online debut a few months prior, via CPA's guest juried member show, which was juried by Hamidah Glasgow,Executive Director/Curator of the Center of Fine Art Photography, in Fort Collins, CO. Print Info: This one-of-a-kind alt process landscape photograph was made at the very beginning of my "The Many Rings of Saturn" series, which concentrates on my self-designed processes with various forms (and concoctions) of ice, as well as flowers, sand, and more; The body of work commenced with 4 demo prints (for a Zoom photograms student) that later formed the beginning of the series, which was completed during a paid artist-in-residence for Frames Magazine, in August of last year. Made with ice, sand, glitter, flowers, and wax, the particular print was actually one of those very first demo prints. (Printed July 2022); The title came to me later, and the series was quickly born. I began making photograms in June 2020, due to having an unfinished darkroom at the time; Prior to covid, I was primarily known for my limited edition (film-based) silver gelatin spiritual landscapes...

Throughout his illustrious career, Aaron Siskind (1903-1992) focused on the dramatic textures found in both urban settings and in nature. In recent years, curators have positioned Siskind alongside other American painters and sculptors (including Franz Kline, Robert Motherwell and Louise Nevelson) rather than photographers of the era. Siskind started his career as a documentary photographer and a member of the Photo League. He and his colleagues were interested in photography as a tool to record and address social inequalities of the day. For example, many of his images from the 1930's explored life in Harlem.
