A key figure in postwar German art, Wunderlich developed a highly distinctive visual language that blends elements of Surrealism, Symbolism, and Art Nouveau with a strong emphasis on line, form, and surface. Closely associated with the Hamburg University of Fine Arts—both as a student and later as a professor—Wunderlich gained early recognition for his lithographic work. His career, however, was not without controversy; in the early 1960s, some of his prints were temporarily confiscated due to their erotic content, which at the time was deemed provocative.
