Signed Alessandro Mandruzzato for Design Guild Murano Sommerso Faceted Glass Box, 1970s A striking sculptural Murano glass box signed “Mandruzzato for Design Guild,” showcasing the celebrated faceted-block technique perfected by the Mandruzzato family in the 1960s–80s. The heavy, optic-clear crystal form contains a dramatic sommerso core, rendered in deep black glass infused with shimmering micro-granulated 24k gold. The internal composition appears to float within the thick, architectural walls, magnified by the sharply cut and hand-polished geometric facets. The hinged lid opens to reveal a molded black-glass interior well, its glossy surface contrasting with the jewel-like radiance of the glass block. The original brass piano hinge and frame remain intact. This design was produced as a special commission for Design Guild, a luxury American importer, and is far scarcer than the unsigned Mandruzzato vases and blocks commonly encountered. Striking Mid-Century Modern Murano Sommerso glass vase, in brilliant cobalt and azure blue, with a textured surface contrasting from a smooth polished front panel by Venetian glassworks Alessando Mandruzzato (Italian, 1934-). Measures: 6.25"H x 4.5" diameter. The Mandruzzato family has led the way in contemporary Murano home decor fashions with unique handmade pieces and elegant, distinctive lines always custom made for personalization. From the geometric, flat sides and carved, Minimalist and sinuous details of the brand’s early years, Mandruzzato’s home decor pieces have gradually evolved to become icons of simplicity and exclusive luxury home decor. When Pablo Picasso designed a chessboard with more than eight types of Murano Island glass, the grandfather and father of Alessandro Mandruzzato were asked to produce it. At that moment in time, they began to understand a way to innovate, not with more organic forms, but with geometric shapes and the “cubism concept” in symmetric and asymmetric pieces. These became explosions of contrasting colors and light to create each surface, continuing the old techniques but creating a fusion with the contemporary and modern life. Working together on several projects, Luigi & Gianfranco Mandruzzato and Pablo Picasso created some of the most popular designs and concepts for Murano Modern home décor of all time, including the Cubism and “San MarCo” pieces, heralded as some of the most iconic Mandruzzato models.
