Alexandre Louis Jacob (1876-1972) Figurative Paintings
French, 1876-1972
Alexandre Jacob was born in Paris in 1876. He undertook his formal artistic training at the Académie des Beaux-Arts with Eugene Claude. Jacob lived just outside Paris in Asnières-sur-Seine, situated on the banks of the river Seine.
Jacob is best known for his atmospheric and luminous landscapes. He gained his rare understanding and love for nature through studied inspection, transferring his observations skillfully on to canvas. His masterful evocation of light, atmosphere, colour and sense of place are remarkable and have a true ability to transport the viewer to the very banks of the River Seine and River Marne where Jacob would patiently wait, paintbrush poised to capture his unique visions of the French countryside.
Jacob was a master at capturing the French landscape as it subtly changed between the seasons. In autumn, his paintings contain a golden aura, in winter, a soft creamy light diffuses across the landscape with hues of pinks and blues reflected in snow on the river banks and his depictions of springtime resonate with the crisp morning light. Jacob preferred to paint in the quiet moments after a storm had passed, and each of his landscapes have a unique atmosphere of calm and tranquility, achieved by the still watery reflections in the foreground.
Jacob debuted at the Paris Salon of 1899. He was awarded the Hors Concours at the Salon of 1908 at the Exposition Annuelle des Beaux-Arts and his work was exhibited annually at both the Salon d’Automne and the prestigious Salon d’Hiver, for which he gained numerous awards and distinctions which led to his election as a member of the Jury of the Paris Salon. Along with his close friend Édouard Léon Cortès, Jacob was a member of L’Union des Beaux-Arts de Lagny, formed in 1926.
Herbert Fuller, of Gladwell & Company, London, first came across Jacob’s work in the Paris Salon after the Second World War, and it was at this point that Jacob’s work began to attract the international clientele of this historic art gallery in the City of London. Initially Jacob was represented by Galerie Haussmann in Paris, but as his popularity grew, Gladwell & Company acquired work directly from the artist from the early 1960’s until Jacob’s death in 1972. In recent years, Gladwell & Patterson have had the good fortune to collect some unique drawings by Jacob which the artist would send to his close friends at Christmas and New Year.
Jacob’s work has featured in numerous exhibitions in France, South America, United States and throughout Europe. His paintings have been acquired by the French Government, the City of Paris, The Department Seine and the Conseil General de la Seine. Jacob’s work also features in many distinguished private collections and museums across Europe, including Troyes, St. Etienne, Fougeres, Paris, St. Nazair and St. Quentin.
Since Jacob’s death, three generations of the Fuller family of Gladwell & Patterson have continued to place Jacob’s illuminating oil paintings in illustrious private collections worldwide. In recent years Jacob’s paintings have risen in popularity.to

Nelson H. White was born in New London, Connecticut in 1932. White has been surrounded by art and artists from the time he was born. He received his earliest art instruction from his grandfather, Henry Cooke White (1861-1952) and his father Nelson Cooke White (1900-1989), both important American artists. The family lived in Waterford, Connecticut and the elder White had been an early member of the art colony in Old Lyme, Connecticut. Known for his paintings of the Connecticut landscape and shoreline, Henry Cooke White became a teacher to his son, Nelson Cooke White. Living with his parents at the Florence Griswold house in Old Lyme, he met some of the most important and influential artists of the day, Childe Hassam, Will Howe Foote and Harry Hoffman.
Later, Nelson White's father began to take his family to summer on Shelter Island and became friendly with many of the artists of the Peconic colony such as Irving Wiles, an important American impressionist. After graduating from the Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts in 1951, Nelson H. White began to study at Mitchell College in Connecticut but left to pursue studies in the violin, musical theory and composition. At this time, he began to spend more time studying art with his father and grandfather. By 1955, Nelson H. White had decided to devote himself to a career as a painter and traveled to Florence, Italy to become an apprentice to Pietro Annigoni, the world-renowned Florentine master. Within two years, the young White had won two awards for his work. While in Florence he also studied with the great Italian teacher, Nerina Simi. Today, White divides his time between the United States and Florence. White is still actively involved with studies at The Florence Academy of Art in Florence, Italy.
Although he has received instruction from some very important artists, White's work is highly individual. He paints with great spirit. Upon seeing his work one quickly senses White’s great love for nature and the outdoors. Through his eyes we are able to view and interpret nature in an intimate manner. Whether Nelson H. White is painting the Connecticut shore, a beach in Italy, a pond on Shelter Island or the hills of Vermont, he allows the observer to view a soft, yet dramatic side of nature. His ability to use color, coupled with rich brush work and a graduation of light, air and atmosphere allows one to enjoy a certain mood which is clearly conveyed in White's paintings. It is a mood that leaves us with a lasting impression.
White has shown his work in numerous galleries across the globe since the 1950s, from the United States all the way to Italy and Russia. White's first museum restrospective was in the New Britain Museum of American Art in July 2012. His work can be found in many private and public collections, as well as several museums.

"South Ferry from Shelter Island" Oil painting, seascape Sag Harbor, Hamptons
By Angel Ramiro Sanchez
Located in Sag Harbor, NY
Painted from life, a subtle and colorful seascape. The South Ferry runs across the Peconic Bay, from North Haven, Sag Harbor, to Shelter Island. A humble spot in New York's famous Hamptons.
Signed: Angel Ramiro Sanchez
Angel Ramiro Sanchez was born in 1974 in Maracaibo, Venezuela. At age six was accepted with full scholarship into the Instituto the Niños Cantores del Zulia, school for musically gifted children. At age fourteen he began five years of apprenticeship with the realist painter, Abdon J. Romero, an eminent specialist in murals for churches and public buildings. In 1993, a study grant from Mgr. Gustavo Ocando Yamarte, Founder the Niños Cantores, enabled him to travel to Florence, Italy, where he studied at the renowned Accademia di Belle Arti, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1997. At the same time, he was enrolled at The Florence Academy of Art,founded by painter Daniel Graves, where he received a diploma in Painting. Ramiro was appointed senior painting instructor at The Florence Academy of Art in 1997, and is currently Director of the Advanced Painting Program.
Ramiro paints only from life, searching for accuracy beyond physical appearance to reach the psychological state of his subject. He believes the painter must draw his information from "all five senses" to tell the complete human story.
