Alfred MANESSIER Art
French, 1911-1993
Alfred Manessier was born on 5 December 1911 in Saint-Ouen in the Somme. Trained at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Amiens (1924 - 1929), he completed his training at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris and spent a brief period in the studio of the painter Roger Bissière, who introduced him to frescoes and to whom he took refuge in Boissiérettes in the Lot at the beginning of the war.
From 1947 onwards, stained glass occupied a large part of his work, which was now based on abstraction. He carried out about twenty projects in France, including the stained glass windows for the church of Saint-Michel des Bréseux (Doubs), his first commission (1948 - 1950), those in the church of Saint-Pierre de Trinquetaille in Arles (1953), and the chapel of Sainte-Thérèse de l'Enfant Jésus et de la Sainte Face in Hem (Nord - 1957). The stained glass windows of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Abbeville, one of his last commissions carried out between 1982 and 1993, are considered his masterpiece. He also executed a dozen stained glass projects in Switzerland, Germany and Spain.
As an abstract painter of the Ecole de Paris, Manessier frequently tackled subjects related to the Catholic religion. His paintings are often inspired by the landscapes of Northern France, but also by his travels. From 1956 onwards, he produced a large number of political paintings entitled "Hommage", which echoed the violence in the world.
The dissemination of his artworks in the public space through these stained glass windows gave him great notoriety during his lifetime, and his paintings were awarded numerous international prizes (such as the Grand Prix of the Venice Biennale, which he received in 1962, alongside Albert Giacometti, who received the Grand Prix for sculpture).
He died on 1er August 1993 as a result of a car accident, shortly after the completion of the stained glass windows in Abbeville.to

JOYCE KOZLOFF BIOGRAPHY
Joyce Kozloff was born in Somerville, New Jersey in 1942. She received a BFA from Carnegie Institute of Technology, Pittsburgh, PA in 1964 and an MFA from Columbia University in 1967. Kozloff was a major figure in both the Pattern and Decoration and the Feminist art movements of the 1970s. In 1979, she began to focus on public art, increasing the scale of her installations and expanding the accessibility of her art to reach a wider audience. Kozloff has since executed a number of major commissions in public spaces, including Dreaming: The Passage of Time for the United States Consulate, Art in Embassies Program in Istanbul, Turkey; The Movies: Fantasies and Spectacles for the Los Angeles Metro’s Seventh and Flower Station, CA; Caribbean Festival Arts for P.S. 218, New York, NY; New England Decorative Arts for the Harvard Square Subway Station, Cambridge, MA; and Bay Area Victorian, Bay Area Deco, Bay Area Funk for the International Terminal, San Francisco Airport, CA.
Since the early 1990s, Kozloff has utilized mapping as a device for consolidating her enduring interests in history, culture, and the decorative and popular arts. She initially concentrated on cities known to her, onto which patterns and images reflecting their colonial pasts were then overlaid. Subsequent series examined bodies of water and the inaccuracies of early maps from the so-called “Age of Discovery.” In 1999-2000, Kozloff was awarded the Jules Guerin Fellowship / Rome Prize from the American Academy in Rome, Italy. During her yearlong residency abroad Kozloff conceived and completed Targets, a nine-foot walk-in globe in twenty-four sections, each of which is painted with an aerial map of a place that has been bombed by the U.S. in the years since World War II. A 2001 residency at the Bogliasco Foundation in Liguria, Italy provided the genesis for Boy's Art, a series of twenty-four collaged drawings based on maps, diagrams, and illustrations of historic battles...

'Winter Silhouettes, ' offset lithograph by Schomer Lichtner
By Schomer Lichtner
Located in Milwaukee, WI
'Winter Silhouettes,' a small and delicate print, is an original offset lithograph by the Milwaukee artist Schomer Lichtner. The composition displays registers of foliage, emerging from the white of the paper as though emerging from the snow-covered ground. The artwork is thus plays with the materials of printmaking; the paper is both the support and the primary indication of the season. The subtle texture of the tooth of the paper also adds life to the image, giving the snow a wind-swept, creature trodden surface. The free forms of the grasses and leaves resemble the lyrical mid-century works of the French artist Henri Matisse, which combined with these material concerns demonstrate Lichter's modern sensibilities.
3.75 x 2.75 inches, image
5.5 x 4.5 inches, paper
10 x 8 inches frame
Signed and dated in the stone, lower right
Framed to conservation standards in a shadow-box style mounting, using 100 percent rag matting, museum glass, and housed in a cherry wood moulding
Overall excellent condition; some toning to edges of paper; some minor abrasions to frame
Milwaukee artist Schomer Lichtner was well known for his whimsical cows and ballerinas and abstract imagery. He and his late wife Ruth Grotenrath, both well-known Wisconsin artists, began their prolific careers as muralists for WPA projects, primarily post offices.
Lichtner also painted murals for industry and private clients. Schomer was a printmaker and produced block prints, lithographs, and serigraph prints. His casein (paint made from dairy products) and acrylic paintings are of the rural Wisconsin landscape and farm animals. He became interested in cows when he and Ruth spent summers near Holy Hill in Washington County. According to David Gordon, director of the Milwaukee Art Museum, Schomer Lichtner had a tremendous joie de vivre and expressed it in his art.
Schomer Lichtner was nationally known for his whimsical paintings and sculptures of black- and white-patterned Holstein cows and elegant ballerina dancers. Lichtner also painted all sorts of combinations of beautiful women, flowers and country landscapes. James Auer, former Milwaukee Journal Sentinel art critic, said that his art eventually "exploded into expressionistic design elements with bold, flat areas of color and high energy that anticipated Pop Art." Auer went on to describe Lichtner’s work as full of "wit, vigor and virtuosity."
As early as 1930, Lichtner’s work was shown at the prestigious Carnegie International Exhibition in New York and at museums throughout the Midwest. As a student, he was a protégé of another icon of 20th century American art, Gustave Moeller.
Lichtner and his wife, Ruth Grotenrath (1912-1988), are celebrated as Milwaukee’s first couple of painting and are regarded as major Wisconsin artists. Lichtner’s impressive production, perseverance, longevity, and positive approach to his life and art made him and his work distinctive and much loved by his many admirers. His work is currently represented in collections at the Milwaukee Art Museum, the John Michael Kohler Art Center, the West Bend Museum, and in the collections of many individuals. Books on the lives and art work of both Lichtner and Grotenrath are in progress and it is anticipated that they will be published next year.
Schomer Lichtner passed away on May 9, 2006 at the age of 101. He continued to amaze and create with his whimsical paintings of ballerinas...
