Amy Scherer Art

American, b. 1964
Amy Scherer is a painter based in Seattle, Washington, best known for her emotive portraits and figure studies. Her work predominantly utilizes acrylics, but she also experiments with oils and gouache to create rich, layered compositions. Scherer’s artistic development was deeply influenced by her mentorship under NW Master Painter William Cumming, whom she met at the Art Institute of Seattle in 1984. Cumming’s mentorship was pivotal in shaping her understanding of color theory, design principles, and the expressive potential of paint. Her main focus is on formalism, which emphasizes compositional elements; color, line, shape, texture, and other perceptual aspects are the “subject” rather than content, meaning, or the historical and social context. Scherer’s work is characterized by its bold, direct engagement with the human form, often exploring themes of identity, vulnerability, and emotion. She takes a deeply introspective approach to her subjects, capturing not only their likeness but their inner world as well. With each painting, Scherer seeks to explore the intersection of personal expression and universal connection, making her work both intensely individual and widely relatable.

Figures on Beach Shoreline Painting of Cliffs in Ireland Oil on Canvas 1990's

Located in Preston, GB

Figures on Beach Shoreline Painting of Cliffs in Ireland Oil on Canvas 1990's, by Irish Artist Darren Paul. Art measures 17 x 13 inches Frame measures 24 x 19 inches This atmospheric coastal landscape captures the rugged beauty of Fair Head, one of Northern Ireland's most iconic natural landmarks. Painted with expressive brushwork and a sensitive understanding of light, the composition draws the viewer across the golden sands and shimmering waters towards the dramatic basalt cliffs that rise majestically above the sea. Soft coastal light filters through sweeping cloud formations, creating a sense of movement and changing weather that is synonymous with the wild Antrim coastline. In the foreground, figures strolling along the beach provide both scale and a human connection to the vast landscape, while the distant white cottages nestle beneath the imposing cliffs, emphasising the harmony between nature and rural life. The artist's confident handling of colour and texture evokes the fresh sea air, rolling surf and expansive horizons of this celebrated Irish location. Rich earth tones contrast beautifully with cool blues and silvery greys, creating a balanced and inviting composition that captures both the grandeur and tranquillity of the scene. A timeless portrayal of one of Ireland's most spectacular coastal settings, this painting will appeal to collectors of Irish landscapes, maritime subjects and works that celebrate the enduring beauty of the natural world. Darren Paul was born in Belfast in 1944. From childhood, Darren had an affinity for art. He attended art classes under the tutorage of Desmond Kinney...

Desire - Nude Lovers Entangled in a Passionate Kiss, Oil on Paper on Canvas

By Bruno Surdo

Located in Chicago, IL

This painting demonstrates Bruno Surdo’s deep grounding in classical figurative tradition while addressing intimacy in a distinctly contemporary register. The tightly compressed composition—two nude bodies locked in a kiss—recalls Renaissance and Baroque explorations of entwined figures, from Michelangelo’s sculptural studies of interlocking forms to Caravaggio’s emotionally charged chiaroscuro. The anatomical modeling is central: the musculature of the male back, the subtle weight shift in the female torso, and the nuanced transitions of light across flesh reveal Surdo’s atelier training and commitment to Renaissance draftsmanship. The dark, atmospheric background isolates the figures, heightening their sculptural presence and intensifying the psychological focus. Art historically, the pose evokes both sacred and mythological precedents—embraces seen in depictions of Venus and Mars, Cupid and Psyche, or even the sensual gravity of Rodin’s later sculptural couples. Yet Surdo strips away allegorical attributes and narrative setting. The white drapery loosely gathered at the woman’s hip subtly references classical sculpture, where cloth both conceals and accentuates form. Unlike historical idealization, however, these bodies feel lived-in and human rather than mythic. Surdo’s broader practice often stages grand allegories or mythological conflicts; here he distills that tradition into a singular moment of private intensity. The painting bridges past and present, demonstrating how the language of Renaissance form and Baroque light can still articulate modern vulnerability, desire, and connection without relying on overt narrative symbolism.
