Karlsen received the Westside Prize by the Westside Urban Forum for her work on the Santa Monica Boulevard Master Plan for the City of West Hollywood. She teaches at Santa Monica College. Karlsen's “Muse X Editions” from 1996 are collages of Renaissance and Medieval art formed into spirals. Much of her artwork resembles this vacuum of collages that draws the viewer in for more.
