A large vintage bronze Neoclassical Revival sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix, by Antonio Canova, signed and dating from the late 20th Century. She is staged as a half-naked beauty on a couch, her head resting on her right arm, holding an apple in the left hand. The patinated bronze sculpture features gilt high-lights and is raised on a black marble base. It bears the replica signature of the artist, Canova. The original can be seen at the Museo e Galleria Borghese, in Rome. "Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix", (Venus Victorious), is probably the most famous work by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. Pauline Bonaparte, sister of the French statesman Napoleon, insisted on being portrayed as Venus by Canova in 1807. Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation.     Antonio Canova's famous neoclassical sculpture is often cited as The Three Graces. The marble sculpture depicts the three daughters of Zeus from Greek mythology. After receiving a commission from an English collector, Canova worked on the piece from 1814 to 1817. It was actually his second treatment of the subject, the original sculpture having been made for Joséphine Bonaparte, the first wife of Napoleon.
