Arman Furniture

French, 1928-2005
Arman was born in Nice, France, in 1928, and showed a talent for painting and drawing as a child. He studied at the the Ecole Nationale des Art Décoratifs in Nice followed by studies at the École du Louvre in Paris. In his early years he focused on abstract paintings. Then, in 1957, he became interested in common objects as works of art. He first did what came to be called his "allures d"objet" (object impressions), where he would dip an object into paint and press it on canvas thus leaving the object's shadow or impression. Then he decided the object itself was worth paying attention to and started to treat them in his own way. His intention was to remove the material purpose of an object so that its only remaining function was to "feed the mind" as a work of art. What better way to achieve that result than by breaking, slicing or even burning objects such as violins, telephones, typewriters or even whole cars? He also made objects useless by accumulating them, such as 2,000 wristwatches in a Plexiglass box that all kept different time. Once emotionally detached from the circumstances associated with a broken object, the viewer could grow to appreciate its abstract beauty; so, in a sense, Arman was literally teaching that things one never thought could be regarded as attractive could indeed turn out to be so. Through this achievement, Arman gained worldwide recognition and is regarded as one of the most prolific and inventive creators of the late 20th century. His work can be found in the collections of numerous museums including the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the Tate Gallery in London and the Centre Pompidou in Paris. Arman’s work has also been exhibited in galleries, museums and public spaces worldwide including the Musée D’Art Contemporain in Tehran, Iran; the Museum of Art in Tel Aviv, Israel; the Musée Des Arts Decoratifs and Opéra De Paris in France; the La Jolla Museum of Contemporary Art in California; and the Museum of Arts and Design and the Guggenheim in New York He died in 2005 in New York.

Beautiful bronze sculpture cast with the lost wax technique, depicting the young David standing with his sword raised, symbol of his victory over the giant Goliath, whose suffering head is represented on the green marble base. With a victorious expression and a proud and elegant bearing, David stands triumphant over the defeated enemy, with a decisive gesture of his right arm and a gaze turned toward the left. Set of Twelve Majolica Vegetables Knife Rests Vallauris, circa 1950
By Vallauris
Located in London, GB
The original pottery of Vallauris is traditional culinary ceramics likely created during the Roman era thanks to nearby clay deposits. From the 16th-century, Italian families from Genoa settled in the city after a deadly epidemic. This timeframe is the beginning of pottery activity by individual artisans. In the 17th-century, the pottery craft activity developed further becoming a significant economic driver of the city. The pottery tradition of Vallauris that continues today is born at this time. In the 19th-century, the advent of the railway helped the potters to organise commercial enterprises. They worked in large factories and exported their production. Utensils and kitchen containers become the specialty of Vallauris. However, 20th-century modernisation brings with it a decline in artisanal pottery activity in Vallauris. After WWII, Picasso gives a new impetus to the pottery of Vallauris when he chooses to settle in the city. Like a magnet, the presence of Picasso draws...

Arman, Keruan Original Table, Signed and Numbered
By Arman
Located in Geneve, CH
Arman Keruan Original Table Signed and numbered Dimensions: 35 x 125 x 100 cm Arman is a painter who moved from using objects for the ink or paint traces they leave to using them as the painting itself. He is best known for his "accumulations" and destruction/recomposition of objects. In October 1960, Arman, Yves Klein, Franc¸ois Dufre^ne, Raymond Hains, Martial Raysse, Daniel Spoerri, Jean Tinguely and Jacques Villegle´, and art critic and philosopher Pierre Restany founded the Nouveau re´alisme group. Joined later by Cesar, Mimmo Rotella, Niki de Saint Phalle, and Christo, the group of young artists defined themselves as bearing in common their "new perspective approaches of reality." They were reassessing the concept of art and the artist for a 20th century consumer society by reasserting the humanistic ideals in the face of Industrial Expansion. In 1961, Arman made his debut in the United States, the country which was to become his second home. During this period, he explored creation via destruction. The "Coupes" and the "Cole`res" featured sliced, burned, or smashed objects arranged on canvas, often using objects with a strong "identity" such as musical instruments (mainly violins and saxophones) or bronze statues. The son of an antiques dealer and amateur cellist, the artist absorbed an intense appreciation for music, the art of collecting and the cultivation of discriminating taste from an early age. After studies at the Ecole Nationale des Arts De´coratifs in Nice, Arman decamped to Paris to study art history at the Ecole du Louvre. His work in these early years focused on abstract paintings inspired by the work of Nicolas de Stae¨l. An avid reader, Arman sought inspiration through books and art reviews, as well as during frequent road trips throughout Europe with his artist friends from Nice, Claude Pascale and Yves Klein. 1972 Arman, Paris, Fernand Hazan, collection "Ateliers d'aujourd'hui" Otto Hahn 1973 Arman, New-York, Harry N. Arman Cellos bronze coffee table Signed and numbered Edition: EA III/V Dimensions: 50 x 165 x 48 cm Arman is a painter who moved from using objects for the ink or paint traces they leave to using them as the painting itself.
