Arthur Cohen Paintings

American, 1928-2012
Born in Manhattan in 1928 but raised in the Bronx, Cohen drew prodigiously as a child. After the war he took classes at Cooper Union and the Arts Students League. He remained in New York City his entire life with the exception of the time he spent in Provincetown, often upwards of 5 months of the year. Considering himself an outsider to New York’s 50s and 60s art scene, Cohen painted to please himself. His modest interiors of his wife Elizabeth, an accomplished concert pianist, capture the elegance and intensity of intimate music-making silhouetted against a flood of reflected light. His iconic Provincetown landscapes are filaments of land wedged between expanses of sea and sky depicting a place outside time. Cohen died in 2012. His legacy is a body of work built of transparent layers of paint and thought, allowing us to believe that the moment will go on forever. Cohen’s work has been collected by major museums and corporations, as well as noted contemporary artists. Always reticent to put his approach into words, Cohen once explained that “The paint is its own subject, and light is almost all of the answer. Once I’m into the work, light becomes paint and a pathway to the painting.”

View from the Train: Cityscape Oil Painting, View of Brooklyn
By Patty Neal
Located in Hudson, NY
View from the Train, 2019 24" X 40" x 1", oil on canvas This contemporary oil painting depicting a metropolitan view is the work of realist painter Patty Neal. The painting offers an intimate view of the city, as seen from a window, as it peeks from behind two metal structures. The dark browns and bright golds beautifully compliment the dusty blue, gray sky. Neal works highlight everyday city scenes, utilitarian infrastructure, and industrial or electrical apparatus. Artist statement: A life is an accumulation of experiences: visual, emotional and mental. By compartmentalizing these snippets of life we create boundaries. The focus of my work for many years has been the exploration of these various life aspects and how they are bound together or bound from each other. My process is often literally composed of boundaries. I make a painting by putting together multiple panels, or I segment a single panel into separate visual spaces. The works are made up of pieces or elements of city and landscape. While exploring the concepts of boundaries I play with visual “reality.” Sometimes I combine images that are upside down with those that are not and juxtapose images from different contexts. Literal boundaries, such as walls fences, expanses of water and highway median strips are also used. My intent is to invite viewers to look beyond these boundaries to see the possibilities of a connected whole. The Village Path after the Rain. Antique painting. Oil on Canvas
By Daniel Sherrin

Daniel Sherrin Picture Size: 24 x 42" (60 x 105cm) Outside Frame Size: 35 x 53" (87.5 x 132.5cm) Oil on Canvas A spectacular example of Sherrin's work in an English gold leaf swept frame. Daniel Sherrin was born in Brentford , Essex in 1868. The son of John Sherrin R.I.- the well-known flower and still life painter. There is no record of him receiving a formal training, but it is probable that as with many of his contemporaries he studied with his father. Most of Daniel Sherrin’s work is in the style of several popular artists of the time. He painted rural landscapes after the style of Benjamin W. Leader; marines after very similar to those of Thomas Somerscales...
