A beautiful, colourful Impressionistic portrait of an Edwardian lady by Arthur Hacker RA which dates to circa 1905. A rare and fine oil on panel in excellent condition. A real quality British Impressionist painting in a gilded oak frame of the period.

Arthur Hacker RA (25 September 1858 - 12 November 1919) was an English classicist painter born in London. Hacker was the son of Edward Hacker (1813–1905), a line engraver specialising in animal and sporting prints (who was also for many years the official Registrar of Births, Marriages and Deaths for Kentish Town in the St Pancras registration district, north London). In his art he was most known for painting religious scenes and portraits, and his art was also influenced by his extensive travels in Spain and North Africa. He studied at the Royal Academy between 1867 and 1880, and at the Atelier Bonnat in Paris. He was twice exhibited at the Royal Academy, in 1878 and 1910, and was elected an Academician in 1910. Cartoonist linked to Editorial Bruguera and its agency Creaciones Editoriales. She got her start drawing girls' or adventure comics in Stories and the Sissi Graphic Novel Supplement. Much of her work from the 1960s was aimed at the European market for young women's magazines through the Selecciones Ilustradas agency. Anecdotally, he collaborated with Marvel Comics, drawing a romantic comic based on a script by Stan Lee for the title My Love (later republished in Our Love Story), credited there as Enrique Monserratt.
He retired from comics in the 1980s to focus on painting.
He was also an Olympic gymnast, a member of the Barcelona Gymnastics Center and the Barcino Tennis Club. Arthur Hacker was perhaps the most versatile of late Victorian artists. As A.L. Baldry upholds in his critique of the artist’s work, ‘A certain disinclination to limit himself to any one type of production has always been an agreeable characteristic of Mr. Hacker’s practice as an artist. His career has been one of wholesome experiment, and has been marked by many changes in his mode of dealing with artistic problems, but it has been full, also, of eminently memorable achievement, and it has been distinguished quite definitely in all its phases’
Hacker excelled in the representation of each and every genre from historical and literary subject matter in a polished, neo‐classical style to depictions of the modern landscape in a personalised Impressionist technique.
Hacker was born in London on 25th September 1858, the son of Edward Hacker the engraver. He went to the Royal Academy Schools from 1876‐1880, before studying in Paris at the atelier of Léon Bonnat (1833‐1922), an internationally famous portrait painter and close friend of Degas. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy at the age of just 20 and attracted public acclaim.
