In 1910, his work l’Enfant au chevreau received an honorable mention and he carried off the school’s “Chenavard” prize. The following year, in 1911, he won the “Lemaire” prize, and a year later, in 1912, he exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français and was a regular exhibitor there up until 1939. Bitter won a bronze medal at the 1913 Salon and the silver medal at the 1921 Salon. In 1913, he worked on a public fountain in Nantes. In 1921, he was commissioned to work on the Sanary-sur-Merwar memorial as well as those in the Marseille cemeteries of St Louis and St Jérôme. In 1923, Bitter created a mascot for Mme Louis Renault’s car and in 1924 won the gold at that year’s Paris Salon The next year, he was one of the sculptors featured by the founder Susse Frères in an exhibition at the Boulevard de la Madeleine showroom. He was commissioned by Susse Frères to work with them on several limited editions. In 1927, he exhibited the work Chloé allongée at the Salon and in 1931 saw him exhibit a bronze version of Diane Chasseresse and in 1932 he was made a Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur and his Cajolerie was declared hors concours at that year’s Salon. In 1935, Bitter showed two works at the Salon, Léda and Le Cygne. Further honors followed when in 1937 he was awarded a gold medal at the Exposition Internationale des Arts et des Techniques de Paris and he was invited to show work at the “Palais de la Céramique” and the “Palais du Métal”. Bitter was also given a diplôme d’honneur by the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

French Modernism Bronze Sculpture “Greyhound & Cat” by Ary Bitter & Susse
By Ary Bitter
Located in Shippensburg, PA
ARY JEAN LÉON BITTER French, 1883-1973 The Greyhound and The Cat Lost-wax cast and patinated bronze signed in base "ary Bitter" and sealed with Susse cachet, signed in cast "cire purdue", signed "Susse Frs. Ets. Paris" Item # 304LJP22P A very scarce example of Bitter's work, this fluid and beautifully captured model depicts of a showdown between a greyhound and a household cat. The freshness of the mold it was captured from is self-evident with a nearly total absence of any notable cold-tooling throughout the surfaces. The signature is sharp to the touch, raised as if Bitter's stylus has only just shaped the wax of the model it was cast from. The untouched original surface patina is brilliant with a chaotic interplay of colors from vivid verdigris to autumnal browns and oranges. Edited by the house of Susse and cast with the lost-wax method. Ary Jean Léon Bitter Born in Marseilles, France on May 29th of 1883, Ary Jean Léon Bitter began his studies under the guidance of Emile Aldebert...

A fluid and beautifly captured model of Doe & Faun, the freshness of the md it was captured from is self-evident with a nearly total absence of any notable cd-toing throughout the surfaces. The signature is sharp and raised like Bitter's stylus has only just shaped the surrounding waxes the model was cast from. Edited by the house of Susse and cast with the lost-wax method. Ary Jean Léon Bitter Born in Marseilles, France on May 29th of 1883, Ary Jean Léon Bitter began his studies under the guidance of Emile Aldebert at the Marseille Beaux Arts in 1895 and later under Jes Coutant. He left Marseilles for Paris where he joined the studio of scptor Louis-Ernest Barrias and in 1906 was admitted into Éce Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts. There he received honourable mention for his exhibit of l'Enfant au chevreau in 1910. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1912 and 1939, receiving a bronze medal in 1913, a silver medal in 1921 and a gd medal in 1924. He was distinguished with the classification of "hors-concours", allowing him to enter exhibition without jury approval and was made a Chevalier of the Légion d'Honneur in 1932. He also achieved a final gd medal at the Exposition Universelle of 1937. Many of his smaller works were cast by Susse Freres, the renowned Parisian foundry with whom he claborated to produce several limited editions. Bitter specialized in the scpture of animals, but he had great breadth to his work and produced a varied body of scpture in the Art Nouveau taste with groups of figures combined with animals. “Elephant with its Young” French Modernism Bronze Sculpture by Ary Bitter
By Susse Freres, Ary Bitter
Located in Shippensburg, PA
A rich and sensitive work, this fine sculpture beautifully depicts the protective nature of the proud Elephant as she stands over her young. The loose impressionism and rough working of the model is captured in the bronze in a way that leaves us with a sense of being very close to the artist's vision. A heavy impasto in the shaping of the model gives us a wonderful a sense of motion, an attempt to capture an incomplete story that remains in flux. As a lost-wax casting, the model was signed "Ary Bitter", "Susse Fre. Ede. Paris" and "cire perdue" in the wax prior to being cast, rather than the signatures being engraved or worked into the model afterwards. It is finished in a complex variated brown patination with hints of red-oxide with highlights intentionally relieved for effect. A tiny cold-stamped "FRANCE" is visible along the lower front edge. The work is raised over a sculpted solid rosewood base, reeded and undulating with a movement that compliments the work beautifully. Born in Marseilles, France on May 29th of 1883, Ary Jean Léon Bitter began his studies under the guidance of Emile Aldebert...
