Banker's/ Desk Lamp by "Pittsburgh Lamp Co." Reverse Painted Shade, ca. 1920's
By Pittsburgh Lamp, Brass and Glass Company
Located in Petaluma, CA
This beautiful little lamp can be used as a desk lamp by just adjusting the lower knuckle to the highest point, which we did for our measurement, or you can lower it with that same knuckle. You can change the angle of the shade with the 2nd knuckle. The beauty is in the lovely painted scene on the shade and the rich gilt patina on the base, which is highlighted with red accent. This really is a little gem. Very high quality and guaranteed to be made by the Pittsburgh Lamp Co. We've sold enough of their lamps to recognize their work. So much more fun than the usual green shade bankers lamp...

Questions About Astral Lighting
  • 1stDibs ExpertApril 5, 2022
How an Astral lamp works depends on its design. Early models held lamp oil and glowed when you lit an internal wick. The shade on the lamp then directed the light down onto a work surface. After the advent of electricity, the lamps carried electricity through wiring to a bulb screwed into a porcelain socket. The electrical energy heated a filament in the bulb, causing it to glow and produce light. You'll find a range of Astral lamps on 1stDibs.
