Bernard Pothast Art

Dutch, 1882-1966

Born in Belgium, Bernard Pothast traveled to Paris to attend the "École des Beaux Arts". There he studied under the artist Gabriel Ferrier. He also studied at the School of Reichsakad and later in Amsterdam under the artist Jules Alby. Bernard Pothast enjoyed a successful career as a genre painter. His favorite subject was the peasant family. European painters of peasants in the nineteenth century found themselves heirs to the inheritance of idyllic literature, which set up certain stereotypes of rustic life. Pothast's images depicted peasant mothers instructing or caring for their young children, placed in rustic interiors sparingly decorated with the family's humble possessions. Their interiors were typically illuminated by the light of early or midday sunshine. These renderings charmed the newly rich industrial merchant, now living and working in urban surroundings, yet craving for the simplicity of country life. Pothast's sentimental illustrations of peasant life were very popular during his lifetime, and remain so today.

Running at the Ring, Medieval Horse Game, Dutch 1720, Oil on Canvas

Located in Eltville am Rhein, DE

Running at the ring, very rare and large representation of the medieval horse game Dutch ar. 1720 unsigned Oil on canvas / relined Size: 42,5 x 114 cm Frame: 47 x 118 cm This is an extremely rare museum piece from the 18th century! Viewing and collection by prior appointment is possible. Authenticity is guaranteed in writing. Running at the ring, riding at the ring or tilting at the ring is an equestrian tournament activity originally practiced at European royal courts and likely derived from other lance games like quintain. It gained new popularity at Natural Chimneys near Mount Solon, Virginia, possibly as early as the 1820s, and since 1962, has been the state sport of Maryland. A similar contest, the corrida de sortija, is held in Argentina where it is considered a gaucho sport derived from the Spanish tradition of medieval tournaments. This version of a lance game or quintain could be played in teams, and the riders sometimes dressed in exotic fancy costume as a spectacle at weddings or other court festivals. Costumes for a 1570 tournament in Prague were designed by Giuseppe Arcimboldo. At Munich in February 1568, at a match held at the wedding of Renata of Lorraine and William V, Duke of Bavaria, the spectators were entertained by the costumed aristocratic riders and professional Italian comedians. Henry of Navarre bought steel rings and painted lances for a masquerade in 1576. There are many records of running at the ring at the Scottish and Tudor courts. At court, the prize was often a diamond ring presented by a lady. A tournament of tilting at the ring continues to be held in Denmark at Sønderborg annually in July and the Ringridermuseet is dedicated to the sport. It is also a tradition to have variations of this game at summer get-togethers in small Danish villages. Here they will often use anything but a horse, such as bike, lawnmower, tractor or even other people. Modern ring tilting tournaments have also been held in Croatian Istria since at least the 1970s. Running at the ring, usually referred to as a ring tournament, ring jousting, or simply as jousting, has been practiced in parts of the American South since at least the 1840s. Ring tournaments are still held in Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina, but most frequently in Maryland, which made this form of jousting its state sport in 1962. Costume fabrics for Henry VIII of England to run at the ring at Greenwich Palace in January and February 1516 included velvets, damasks, satins, and sarcenets. He performed at Richmond Palace for the Venetian ambassador in May 1517. In February 1547, English soldiers at Boulogne held a tournament to celebrate the coronation of Edward VI. Instead of tilting, they held courses of running at the ring. One team of six were dressed "like Turks". John...

Male and female portrait, both in silk kimono, possibly textile dealers

By Christoffel Lubieniecki

Located in Amsterdam, NL

CHRISTOFFEL LUBIENIECKI (1659-1729) Pair of portraits of a gentleman and a lady, both in silk kimono, before a country house (circa 1680) Indistinctly signed “C.......” on a box under the man’s left hand Oil on canvas, 79.5 x 67 cm each Both sitters are portrayed wearing a silk “Japanese” coat. During the second half of the seventeenth the Japanese silk coat, an adapted Japanese kimono, became a real vogue in the Dutch elite. The exclusive Dutch trade contacts with Japan can explain the popularity of the kimono-style silk coats in the Netherlands. Everybody who could afford one, dressed in such a fashionable and comfortable coat and, like the present sitters, some proud owners had themselves portrayed in a “Japanese” coat often together with an oriental carpet to underline their standing and international connections. These portraits are the work of the Polish-born portraitist Christoffel Lubieniecki (also known as Lubienitski, Lubinitski or Lubiniecki) Lubieniecki was first trained in Hamburg under Julian Stuhr and after 1675 in Amsterdam under Adriaen Backer and Gerard de Lairesse. He specialized in landscapes, generally of an Italianate character, and in portraits. The loving execution of these contented burghers, enjoying the garden vistas of their country house, places him alongside Amsterdam portraitists such as Constantijn Netscher and Michiel van Musscher...
