Executed in 2001, this intimate yet visually powerful work captures the timeless beauty of Walpi, the historic Hopi village perched atop First Mesa in northern Arizona. Working in watercolor, ink, and charcoal, Van Bork transforms the village's iconic adobe architecture into an expressive arrangement of luminous blues, warm yellows, vibrant oranges, and brilliant pinks. Loose gestural brushwork and confident linear drawing create a compelling balance between abstraction and representation, conveying not only the physical landscape but also the spiritual atmosphere and enduring cultural significance of Walpi.
