Brian Adgate Landscape Paintings

American, b. 1949
Brian Adgate is an American painter whose work explores the landscape through color, form, texture, and memory. Born in Jackson Heights, New York, and based in the Boston area, Brian has spent decades painting, traveling, exhibiting, and teaching. His work moves between abstraction and representation, using the natural world as a starting point for compositions that are structured yet often highly intuitive. Brian earned his BFA from the New York Institute of Technology in 1970 and his MFA from the University of Wisconsin in 1972. Rather than depicting a landscape literally, he is interested in the relationships that emerge within it—the shapes of geological formations, shifts in light and atmosphere, expanses of land and water, and the colors that give a place its particular character. Working primarily in oil paint, he builds these observations into semi-abstract landscapes through layered color, varied surfaces, and a combination of deliberate structure and improvisation. Travel has played an important role in the development of Brian’s work. He has drawn inspiration from landscapes across the United States as well as Iceland, Morocco, and Australia, where he lived and taught art for five years. The environments vary dramatically, from the dark and shifting blues of Iceland to the intense light and heat of Morocco and Australia, but Brian approaches them as part of the same larger subject: the natural world waiting to be experienced and interpreted. Brian has exhibited his paintings in the United States and Australia. His solo exhibitions have included Hawthorn City Gallery in Victoria, Australia; Bromfield Art Gallery and Mark Gallery in Boston; and Three Columns Gallery at Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His work has also appeared in group exhibitions at the Fuller Art Museum, First Street Gallery in SoHo, and numerous galleries throughout New England. His paintings are held in private collections in the United States, Europe, Australia, and Japan. Alongside his studio practice, Brian has maintained a longstanding commitment to art education, teaching painting and drawing at institutions including Curry College and Quincy College in Massachusetts.
