Brueton Chairs

Initially known as Spanish Metal Arts — a supplier of fencing for stately homes on Long Island — the principals at New York furniture manufacturer Brueton were artistically minded from the start, ensuring that their furniture company would become a major player in the world of stylish, modern stainless steel-based design. The company’s sculptural glass-topped dining tables and vintage mid-century modern chrome-framed armchairs are welcome additions to any contemporary interior.

Brueton got its start with the Manufacturers Hanover Trust building in Manhattan. When award-winning architect Gordon Bunshaft of engineering firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill (SOM) was designing what would become a modernist marvel in the 1950s — a structure that traded sleek glass facades for the stone columns typically associated with banks — SOM worked with Spanish Metal Arts’s Bruno Saudino and Tony Vitale to furnish the property.

For Bruno and Tony, it marked the start of the aptly named Brueton — the pair produced understated side tables and seating made of glass and aluminum for SOM’s project. Revolutionary for its time, instead of traditional narrow windows, the Manufacturers Hanover Trust building was practically transparent — allowing passers-by to see the vault from the outside. (Celebrated photographer Ezra Stoller, who chronicled iconic New York buildings like Mies van der Rohe’s Seagram Building and the soaring silhouette of Eero Saarinen’s TWA Terminal, shot the building in 1954.)

Much like the material associated with so many of its offerings, Brueton built a reputation of being a strong, dependable and polished manufacturer. The brand worked with designers such as J. Wade Beam, who created cylindrical tables of polished chrome and exquisite marble mirrors during the 1970s, as well as Massimo and Lella Vignelli, a pair of innovative polymaths who left a profound mark on design and wider visual culture.

Ten Modernist Lacquered Dining Chairs by Brueton
By Brueton
Located in Dallas, TX
A rare set of ten Willow dining/game chairs, a Brueton classic designed by Mitchell Pickard. Handmade in the USA. Modernist armless chairs with Klismos form, the black lacquered frames with saber legs that splay for a dramatic profile. The back legs extend seamlessly to form the back support. The chairs are beautifully upholstered in a pewter colored crocodile velvet. The chairs have been professionally restored to mint condition. The graceful curves of the solid hardwood legs and the sweep of the curved back - the result is simply stunning. They look and feel amazing. Founded in 1926, Brueton Industries Inc a New York City-based company that produces upscale furniture and accessories for the residential, contract, and hospitality markets. One of the first companies to introduce stainless steel into furniture. Along with designs by Stanley Jay Friedman and J. Wade Beam, Sergio Orozco...

Donghia Contemporary Lacquered Dining Chairs, Set of 8
By Donghia
Located in Countryside, IL
Donghia contemporary Lacquered dining chairs - set of 8. These chairs measure 22 wide x 21.5 deep x 38.5 inches high, with an arm height of 27 inches. (Seat height measurements coming soon). About Photos: We take our photos in a controlled lighting studio to show as much detail as possible. We do not photoshop out blemishes. Condition: At this time, all of our contemporary furniture is sold in the same condition as it is the day it was photographed in our studio. Since our restoration shop is overwhelmed with mid century pieces, our contemporary furniture is sold in "As Is" condition for the foreseeable future. This means that unlike our mid century furniture, we do NOT automatically send our contemporary furniture through the restoration process, therefore it is not subject to our normal restoration lead times. So when you order contemporary pieces from us, they can often ship out to you a lot faster than normal. Currently we estimate that time to be within 4 to 6 weeks, but if this detail is really important to you, please contact us for an updated time estimate before ordering. Even so, when you purchase a contemporary piece, we still devote a lot of attention to detail to carefully clean, wrap, and pack it for safe transport during shipping; plus we keep you fully informed throughout the whole purchasing process - because we want you to be happy with your purchase and tell everyone how easy it is to buy good quality furniture from us at Modern Hill...
